Spitting Terrors are Animals.

These dog-like monsters are the scourge of many players in the Catacombs and into hell, thanks to their machine gun-like projectile attack. Their spit deals magic damage and is launched faster than any other monster missile attack in the game. Boss packs of the Spitting Terrors are a nightmare for melee characters, and must sometimes be left behind or avoided.

Mercifully, their acid balls have a limited range, rather than flying until they hit a target or a wall, like most monster projectiles. This makes Spitting Terrors fairly easy for ranged attackers, who can stand just at the extent of the range of the acid balls and return fire with greater range and devastating results.

These monsters are quite dangerous at melee range as well, especially to characters in cloth or chain. Their to/hit is fairly low and they have trouble hitting characters in heavy plate in Hell, but two or more of them hitting at once are very likely to stun lock and kill Sorcerers, bow-using Rogues, and other lightly armored adventurers.

Note that they are animals and suffer 50% bonus damage from swords. This is why the Lava Maws commonly found on level 13 and 14 in hell seem to die so quickly against bladed weapons. (They also lack any lightning resistance, and can be ruined by Chain Lightning.)

Statistics[edit]

  • Stats are listed by Normal / Nightmare / Hell difficulty levels.
  • MFL: Magic / Fire / Lightning.
    • I = Immune
    • R = Resistant (75%)
    • - = no resistance or immunity to that element
      • No monsters in Diablo or Hellfire have any physical resistance or immunity.
  • IntF = Intelligence Factor. Values are from 0-3; smarter monsters will pursue more doggedly, and the value is used in various calculations. Monsters that can Follow if you break the line of sight or open Doors are marked with F and D.

Combat Stats[edit]

Spitting Terrors use a melee claw attack at close range, but are chiefly known (and feared) for the acid they spit from a distance. This attack deals magic damage, and while each projectile does less damage (no damage is listed in Jarulf's Guide) than their melee attack, the acid balls can hit far more frequently from from a great distance.

Movement Speed[edit]

Characters walk at 0.4 speed. See the Diablo Characters page other swing speeds, casting speeds, and other useful character speed break points.

  • All types of Spitting Terrors spit acid (magic damage) projectiles. The (very fast) speed of these is listed second in attack and hit time.
