==Calculations==
Hey there. I guess you are interested in calculations, huh? Welcome to DiabloWiki in either way! I did leave a reply on [[Talk:Calculators|calcs]] for you. Is this your first experience in a wiki? You seem to know what talk pages are for, so I almost assume you have some sort of previous experience? --[[User:Leord|Leord]] 14:26, 30 January 2009 (CET)

:We generally have any discussions on the same page they started, so if you continue to reply here, I'll keep doing the same. =) Someone was nice enough to answer your question on the [[Talk:Calculators|calcs]] btw. ;) I'm not gonna push anyone to any specific fansite, but just get a hotmail account or something and register with all of them, so you can make a post if needed =) --[[User:Leord|Leord]] 15:44, 3 February 2009 (CET)

:Oh, forgot to actually reply. =) Cool to see a somewhat (or very?) experienced wiki contrib here =) As for the edits, there is mostly navigation and stuff like that needed here in the Diablo 2 Wiki. The Diablo 3 Wiki is where we put all lore etc, so if anything, we'd need some help there. I'm more than happy to give you a few pointers if you need inspiration to what to do =) --[[User:Leord|Leord]] 15:46, 3 February 2009 (CET)

:: Left a message on [[Calculators]] by the way. Also, got any plans for future edits in the wikis? =) --[[User:Leord|Leord]] 18:16, 6 February 2009 (CET)

==Two new edits==
Hey man, do you watch your talk page at all? =) Anyway, saw the edit on the [[Chaos Sanctuary]]. Did you just make that one, or was there similar articles around you took it from? Either way, it's awesome, and perhaps we should look at a simple way to add all of the locations, with some sort of navigation? I could help you with anything you need. --[[User:Leord|Leord]] 14:49, 9 February 2009 (CET)
:Hello. Yes I do read my talk page, but I don't necessarily reply :)
:As for levels and such, my suggestion would be to do small basic templates that could be substitued to fast-start a page (I copied from Tristam for the Chaos Sanctuary).
:[[User:Crazy Dropper|Crazy Dropper]] 15:11, 9 February 2009 (CET)
::Ok, you basically mean like a [[Boilerplate]]?, or do you mean a [[Template]]? These things have a slightly odd lingo in Wiki language =P --[[User:Leord|Leord]] 15:25, 11 February 2009 (CET)
:::I meant a wiki template, like <nowiki>{{Rune standard text}}</nowiki> :) [[User:Crazy Dropper|Crazy Dropper]] 10:28, 17 April 2009 (CEST)
==Edits==
I know you don;t answer much here, but it's nice when I don;t have to talk to a blank wall ;) Nice job on teh redirects and other pieces of usefulness you did today! =) --[[User:Leord|Leord]] 16:46, 16 April 2009 (CEST)

:Well, I'd rather reply to the user's own talk page so she gets the new message notification :)
:But since you apparently follow various modifications, guess that's ok to reply here :p

:Anyway, what would be a good place on the wiki to discuss changes?
:I was considering using templates for many things, for instance factorizing text for runes (always the same boilerplate text). But before doing that I'd like to see what people think of that, and think of pro and cons :)
:(and replying to your last message just above this paragraph, forgot to reply to it :))
Hello.

This FAQ says that you can't copy content to your web site. Whereas the text when editing states that the content is under the GFDL, which does authorize to copy - with conditions!

So what is the licence of the contents?

And the incoherent information should be fixed, imo :)

(if nothing is decided, I'd suggest some CC-BY-SA, since it's apparently much more adapted to collaborative works than the GFDL)
==How to use a Rune==
Runes add different properties to [[shield]]s or [[armor]] vs. [[weapon]]s, and sometimes shields and armor differ as well. See the [[Rune list|full runes listing here]]. Runes can be upgraded; 2 or 3 of one type, plus a particular gem type/quality, can be combined in the [[Horadric Cube]] to upgrade to the next higher level rune. Runes are most powerful when combined into special [[runewords]], so be sure you check the recipes for those.
</center>

==Runewords==
{{runewords}}This is where Runes really become awesome. A "[[RuneWord]]" is the term for an item that has been [[socket]]ed with special Runes in the correct order. Runewords can only be fashioned in regular (gray name, '[[normal]]') socketed items, with the precise number of sockets required for that recipe. No more and no less.

The most powerful weapons and armor in the game are runewords, though they can be difficult to obtain, since the powerful ones require very scarce, high level runes. In addition to the runes, a suitable item must be found to create the runeword in. It makes no sense to create a high damage runeword in a weapon with a low base damage, so expert players search long and hard for just the right item with just the right number of sockets, while working to store up the runes they'll need to fill them.

==Diablo II Rune Item Generation==
Runes are not like gems, they are not dropped in equal amounts, they are more like [[item]]s. There are common runes, and there are runes that you'll find once in your character's life, if that often. Runes drop pretty regularly, you'll often find several a game, but only the common ones. The less common runes are very hard to find, and the rarest of them all are virtually imaginary.

So how do Runes generate? A quick overview of how the game decides which items to drop when is needed.
* When you kill a [[monster]], the game picks a [[Treasure Classes|treasure class]] based on the monster's level ([[Mlvl]]).
* A random roll takes place, and the game either drops an item from that treasure class, drops nothing, or goes down to a lower treasure class.
* Once in the next lower treasure class it can again drop an item from that treasure class, drop nothing, or move to the next lower treasure class.
* It will continue calculating what to drop until selected an item, or selecting to drop nothing at all.

Here's a quick list of comparative Rune scarcity. These figures change with balances in each patch, and they've grown much longer since these numbers, which were accurate for [[v1.07]], when D2X was first released. In [[v1.11]] the curve is much longer; you'll find far, far more of each level rune than you will the next higher level.

==Trivia (Rune History)==
What do you really know about runes? The ones from our world comes from the ancient Vikings, and their "futhark" (equivalence of our 'Alpha Bet(a)'). They allegedly hold magic powers, and the magicks of the 'runa' are still practised today. These practices, called "Seden", are of course done mostly as a pastime, but some forms of the old runes were used in proper form as late as early 20th century in the 'Dalarna' area of Sweden...

In [[Sanctuary]] however, runes are definitely magically inscribed symbols that will grant (sufficiently prepared) [[items]] [[magic]]al properties. For sages of these runes, magical [[RuneWords]] can be created to remake a mundane item into a Runic Item, with powers competing with magical artefacts.

Besides the fact that these supposedly ancient runes hold great and mystic powers, we know little about them. Who created them or how they are created is unknown. They seem to attract [[demon]]s of different kinds, as they are often found on their corpses. If the runes are of demonic origin is not known either. They could have been the simple writing language of the first inhabitants of Sanctuary, who themselves were more powerful than Demons or [[Angel]]s. Whatever the origin, they are of great use to heroes wishing to dethrone [[Diablo]] or [[Baal]].
The relative frequency that an item drops is:
* 2 for wands, staves, scepters, and class-specific weapons

Crazy Dropper: /* Act II: Desert Mercenaries */ link to auras

Mercenaries are NPCs players can hire to fight alongside them. While Mercenaries were largely a novelty in early versions of ''Diablo II'', they are substantially upgraded in ''Diablo II: Lord of Destruction'', and can be quite effective when properly equipped and supported.

There are four types of mercenaries, Rogues (Act 1 archers), Town Guards (Act 2 spear carriers), Iron Wolves (Act 3 sorcerers), and Barbarians (Act 5 warriors). Players can only use one mercenary at a time, and hiring a new one permanently dismisses the current merc.

Mercenaries can be outfitted with weapons (of the appropriate type), body armor, and headgear, and they benefit from most of the same bonuses that your characters enjoy. Mercenaries have inherent stats and bonuses as well, and can survive without quality equipment, though the combat mercs are basically harmless without a good weapon.

In v1.10+, mercs are all available for hire at levels near those of your character. In earlier versions of the game, they were often much lower, and newly hired Mercs had to be leveled up extensively to make them useful and hardy enough to survive, especially when obtained on Hell difficulty.

=Act I: Rogue Scouts=

[[Image:Npc-flavie.jpg|frame|Rogue Mercenary]]Rogue mercenaries are obtained from [[Kashya]] in the [[Rogue Encampment]]. (She gives one as a reward for completing the [[Blood Raven]] quest, and will hire them after that point, or to any character over level 8.) Rogue mercs are ranged attackers who use bows to attack from a distance. They are fairly fragile and must be kept from harm, but can dispense solid artillery support from behind the front lines. Their AI largely keeps them from harm, but they can be come confused as to how far they should stand from the action, and will sometimes wander back and forth uselessly.

These rogues may add fire or cold damage to their arrows; this option is only visible in the hiring window, and makes little difference to their overall damage, though the cold can add a useful chilling effect, especially in the early going when new characters need all the help they can get.

All rogue mercs can cast the Amazon skill Inner Sight. This skill lowers the defense of all enemies by a set amount, and sticks a glowing white dot over their heads.

* '''Skills:''' Cold Arrow/Inner Sight or Fire Arrow/Inner Sight
* '''Allowed Equipment:''' Armor, Helms, Bows (no Crossbows or Amazon-only bows).

==Names==

The names are randomly selected each time a list of mercs for hire is generated; the names do not have any connection to their other abilities or damage types. As is the case with lots of weapons in the game, and especially with the names of NPC mercs, the Blizzard North designers worked in the names of Blizzard employees, and notable members of the Diablo II fan community. This was taken to an extreme with the Rogue mercs, as seemingly every male Blizzard North employee worked in their girlfriend or wife, and every Blizzard North female employee threw in her name or alias. Fans were honored too, Elly and Gaile were webmasters of Diabloii.net, as was Flux (found in Act Three).

[[Image:Desertmerc.jpg|frame|Desert Mercenary]]The Hirelings of Act II are available from [[Greiz]] in [[Lut Gholein]]. They are melee attackers and use spears/javelins or polearms to great effect. These mercs are the most popular hires in the game, since they come with various auras that can greatly benefit their employer.

'''Skills:''' Jab attack.<br>
'''Auras:''' These mercs have a variety of auras. There are three types available on each difficulty level, though the auras found on Normal and Hell difficulty levels are the same.

=Act III: Iron Wolves=

[[Image:Npc-iron-wolf1.jpg|frame|Iron Wolf Mercenary]]The Hirelings of Act III are available from [[Asheara]] in the [[Kurast Docks]]. These are the only magical mercs, and each one specializes in Lightning, Cold, or Fire. Their AI is similar to that of the Rogue mercs and they tend to stay behind the lines and attack from a distance, even though they carry shields and can achieve fairly high defense and resistances.

==Spells==

Each Iron Wolf is either fire, lightning, and cold based. None of them ever mix their elements, and though they can each use two or three spells, this only adds slightly to their variety.

* Fire: Inferno or Fireball.
* Cold: Glacial Spike, Ice Blast, and Frozen Armor.
* Lightning: Charged Bolt and Lightning Bolt.

The cold are the most popular, since that element has the effect of chilling and slowing targets, but the damage dealt by the three types is equivalent.

'''Allowed Equipment:''' Armor, Helms, Shields and Swords

'''Notes:''' Iron Wolves very rarely hit anything with their weapon, so are best equipped with a sword that has spell-caster bonuses.

==Names==

There are quite a few tongue-twisting names available for Iron Wolves. One is randomly assigned to each of the Iron Wolves your character sees on the hireling menu. As is the case with lots of weapons in the game, and especially with the names of NPC mercs, the Blizzard North designers worked in the names of Blizzard employees, and notable members of the Diablo II fan community. The last 3 Iron Wolf names (they are listed in this order in the game database file, making it clear that the honored fans were added last) are all fans; Jarulf is the author of the famous [[Jarulf's Guide|Diablo guide]]. Flux was one of the webmasters of [http://www.Diabloii.net Diabloii.net] (co-webmasters Elly and Gaile both showed up as Act One rogue mercs). And Scorch was the author of the first monster specialty site, Darkness, which was hosted by Diabloii.net.
=Act IV=

There are no Mercenaries available for hire in Act Four. [[Tyrael]] will resurrect fallen Mercenaries, at least.

=Act V: Barbarians=

[[Image:Npc-barbarian1.jpg|frame|Barbarian Mercenary]]The Hirelings of Act V are available from [[Qual-Kehk]] in [[Harrogath]] once you have completed the Rescue the Barbarians quest. Unlike Kashya in Act One, he does not reward you with a free barbarian merc.

* '''Skills:''' Bash and Stun
* '''Allowed Equipment:''' Armor, Helms, Barbarian Class-specific Helms, One Sword (can't dual wield).

==Names==

The names are randomly assigned to each of the Barbarians when the hireling menu is generated. As with the other mercs, Blizzard North worked a lot of employee and friend names into the list of Barbarians, and honored a few fans as well. Varaya and Khan were two of the best known mod-makers from the days of ''Diablo'', famed for their well-made Lord of the Rings-themed mods. Lanth was another of the early staff members of Diabloii.net, but likely earned his merc name by being a regular in the Diabloii.net chat room, which was regularly frequented by Peter Hu (AKA Isolde, see the rogue merc names), the chief architect of the v1.10 patch, in which Lanth's name was added.
=Misc Comments=
The following is from Blizzard's page. Upgrade and edit when time permits.

Incorporate info from the [http://strategy.diabloii.net/news.php?id=580 extensive Merc strategy guide].

Hirelings are Mercenaries that you can hire to fight by your side. Hirelings are very loyal and fight to the death. Hirelings are very useful. Every player should have one! The Hireling follows you and automatically attacks any monsters or hostile players nearby. You can also see them on your Automap as an aqua colored "X". You can only have one Hireling at a time. Each party member can have their own Hireling however bringing the total to 8 Mercenaries in a full game or party.

* Once you have hired a Hireling they appear near you with their icon in the upper left corner. At the top of the Hireling's Icon is their health bar. You can toggle their Icon on and off with the Z key.
* Hirelings improve in Attack Rating (because the hireable level is a factor), and they also fully heal when they level up.
* You cannot harm your Hirelings and they cannot harm you or your party members.
* NPCs in town will heal your Hireling. The Paladin Prayer Aura or Holy Bolt Skill will also heal your Hirelings. Party friendly skills and spells will also work on Hirelings. Wells will also heal Hirelings and other minions. You can use Potions to Heal your Hirelings as well.
* There are no Hirelings available in Act IV. There are none that would brave the horrors of Act IV for merely gold. You can take your existing Hirelings into Act IV however.
* Hirelings will die of Poison if you do not heal them.

==Hireling Information==
When you hire a Hireling you are charged a one time fee in Gold. The price of each Hireling is listed when you Hire them. The Hire menu also lists some additional information about the Hireling such as Level, Damage, special attacks, and Hit Points.

==Attributes and Experience==
Hirelings in Diablo II: Lord of Destruction come with their own set of attributes: Strength, Dexterity, Health, Damage, Defense, and Experience. As Hirelings kill monsters, they gain experience points. When they gain enough experience points to reach a new level, their attributes automatically improve. You can also improve their attributes by equipping them with better equipment (see below). Keep in mind that Hirelings aren't just paid mercenaries--they are co-adventurers. They fully share experience for their kills with you, and they receive a smaller share of experience for monsters that you kill.

Mercenaries do not get experience from party member kills, but they do from your summoned monsters/characters.

Hirelings will not gain experience once they have reached your level. They will begin to gain experience again once you level up.

Hirelings might not level up very well if they are in areas where monsters are much higher in level. You might have to try different areas to find good places to level up your Hirelings. Try to keep your Hirelings near your character level. Always quickly resurrect them so that they don't fall further behind.

==Hireling Levels==
Hirelings cannot level past your current Character Level. The only way you can get a Hireling that is a higher level than your character is by buying one at that higher level. Hirelings at a higher level will not level up or gain experience until you catch up to their level. Often they will not level up until you level up. Once you have leveled up, they will quickly do the same, often in a few hits.

Hirelings have a maximum level of 98.

==Hireling Resistances==
Hirelings gain Resistances when they level up. They also are affected by the Nightmare and Hell Difficulty resistance penalties.

==Hireling Damage==
hireling min = [(weapon min)*(str+100)/100]+base min
hireling max = [(weapon max)*(str+100)/100]+base max

Bonuses such as Fire or Cold Damage are added to the overall damage after the formula, bonuses such as increased damage % are factored only on the weapon itself and not the Hirelings base damage and goes toward the weapon min and max stat. This won't affect how much the Hireling actually deals if they never use their weapon. The Rogue from act 1 should also be the same except substitute Dexterity for Strength in the formulae.

==Hireling Continuity==
Hirelings are now willing and able to accompany you to any of the various Acts of the game. In fact, you can actually finish the entire game through all three difficulty settings using only the first Hireling received in Act I. You may choose to employ a new Hireling at any time, but you may not take more than one Hireling into your service at a time. If you choose to replace your current Hireling with a fresh one, your old Hireling will retire and be unavailable for further service. Before you replace a Hireling, open the Hireling Inventory and remove any items you want to keep. Otherwise, you will lose that equipment.

==Hireling Death==
When your Hireling dies, you can return to the nearest mercenary captain and either pay to have your late comrade resurrected, or hire a new one. If you choose to resurrect your Hireling, he or she will return to your employ with all of the attributes, experience, and equipment he or she had at the time of death. If, however, you decide to employ a new Hireling, you give up the services of the recently departed and forfeit any equipment he or she was wearing. Note: if your character dies, your Hireling dies as well.

As the Hireling gets to higher levels it will cost more to revive them. It will never cost more than 50,000 Gold to revive your Hireling.

In Act IV, Tyrael will resurrect your Hireling but he will charge you. What does he do with that gold? Angels got to pay the bills too.

==How can I keep my Hireling Alive?==
Give your Hireling good equipment. Find items that raise their resistances to max. Give them high Defense Armor. Give them high damage weapons. Heal them during battle. Whenever their health starts to drop, give them a Health Potion. Health Potions heal over time for them just like they do for you so keep this in mind. Use Rejuvenation Potions in emergency situations when your Hireling is about to die. Use Full Rejuvenation Potions in extreme emergencies. When your Hireling is about to die, back away from battle and heal them. You can also use a Town Portal and visit the Town Healer, and quickly return to battle. Items of Life Regeneration can also help keep Hirelings in full health. Use Wells to heal your Hirelings as well. The combination of good equipment, careful healing, and backing away so your Hireling doesn't die will help reduce the number of times your Hireling dies and will save you the resurrection cost.

==Hireling Spells==
Hirelings can cast player spells. They have a unlimited supply of Mana so you do not have to be concerned about giving them Mana Potions or about giving Hirelings Items that add to Energy or Mana. You cannot control which spells Hirelings cast but certain Hirelings will only cast certain spells. Usually you have to buy a Hireling and see what spells they cast to know which version you have received.

==Hirelings can use Healing Potions==
You can use a Healing Potion from the Belt (either by hotkey or right-clicking) while holding down the shift key to give the Healing Potion to the player's Hireling.

You can also heal your Hireling directly, by left-clicking on a healing or Rejuvenation Potion in your backpack or belt and then dragging it over the Hireling's gold-bordered portrait located in the upper left of the game screen. When the portrait is highlighted, left-click again to release the potion onto the portrait. You can also heal your Hireling by visiting a healing Well. You must keep your mouse cursor over your Hireling for three seconds before the portrait highlights and the text "Drop potion on hireling portrait, right-click to open inventory" appears.

Hirelings have an unlimited supply of Mana or Energy so they do not need and cannot use Mana Potions.

==Hireling Regeneration==
Hirelings automatically regenerate Life over time.

==Hirelings vs. Bosses==
Hireling damage is 50% against Bosses in Normal, 35% in Nightmare, and 25% in Hell difficulties. Additionally, Hirelings takes 10 times more damage from End Act Bosses.

==Player vs Player==
The Player vs Player penalty for players or Hirelings attacking other players is 1/4.

The Player vs Player penalty is 1/2 for Hirelings attacking other Hirelings.

==Giving Equipment to Hirelings==
You can and should furnish your Hirelings with equipment such as armor, helms, and weapons. Your Hirelings must meet all Strength, Dexterity, and Level Requirements for the item, and any weapons must be compatible with the Hirelings' weapon type, as represented by what you see them carrying. (For instance, the Rogue Hirelings in Act I can be equipped with a War Bow, but not a Short Sword, whereas the Town Guard Hirelings in Act II can be equipped with a Voulge, but not a Crossbow.) To equip your Hireling, simply left-click on the appropriate button on your Mini-panel or press the O key to bring up the Hireling Inventory and Information screen. You must keep your mouse cursor over your hireling for three seconds before the portrait highlights and the text "Drop potion on hireling portrait, right-click to open inventory" appears. Then place items in the corresponding slots as you would in your own Inventory screen. Players can not give or take items from a hireling if they are not within range.

Find better and better equipment for your Hirelings. Find resistance equipment to give to them to keep them alive longer. Find high Defense Armor to protect them.

Hirelings start with basic equipment that is not shown on the Hireling Equipment page. You can replace the equipment with new equipment, but if you remove all of the equipment on the Hireling Equipment page, they will still have their basic equipment. You can't for example take away the Rogue's Bow. She will always have a basic bow.

You can try different things to discover what kinds of equipment a Hireling will accept. If they can't wear it, they will let you know. The appearance of a Hireling will remain unchanged when adding new weapons, armor and helms.

Hirelings can use almost all Magical Bonuses including + Skills Items.

==Good Items==
Replenish Life items can help keep your Hirelings healed. Hirelings can take advantage of Ethereal Items because their items do not lose Durability. Give your Hirelings Uniques, Rares or whatever else they can wear. Try to build up their resistances as well if possible.

==Bad Items==
Hirelings have no need for +Mana/Energy Items or Items that Steal % Mana. +Vitality Items also do not work.

Crazy Dropper: slight introduction

{{Item navbox}}

'''Tal Rasha's Wrappings''' is a [[set]] mostly designed for the [[sorceress]].

=Background=
Tal Rasha was one of the greatest Horadric Mages ever to live. He hunted for Baal after the Dark Exile and sought to bind Baal to a Soul Stone like his brothers Diablo and Mephisto. However, during their battle, the Soul Stone Tal Rasha was intending to use was broken. Tal Rasha took up the largest piece of the Soul Stone and thrust it into Baal, temporarily trapping his soul. However, knowing this wouldn't last for long, he also had his brothers restrain him inside a [[Tal Rasha's Tomb|tomb]], and then thrust the stone into his body, to leave him to wrestle with the demon for eternity.

The cloth which people used to be swaddled in before they were interred were sometimes known as wrappings, so this set could be made up of the items in which Tal Rasha was buried in, although in the Diablo cinematics Tal Rasha does not appear as characters do when wearing the full set of [[Tal Rasha's Wrappings]].

=General Notes=

While the full set is designed for (and can only be equipped by, thanks to the Orb) a Sorceress, the armor is a very popular item for all types of characters and even mercs, thanks to the huge magic find, defense, and resistance. It's also common to find magic find-geared characters of all types using the armor, helm, and belt, since equipping any three items from this set grants a 65% bonus to Magic Find, and the armor, helm, and belt hold substantial bonuses, including dual leech, high resistance, magic find, and much more.

* Gambling for set and unique items was enabled in v1.09.
* Item Level: Used in many in-game calculations. Monsters must be of this level to drop the item.
* Clvl req is the character level you need to be to be able to wear the item.

=Weapon Notes=

* Damage Bonus: This determines how you multiply the item damage by your stats to reach the actual damage. Multiply by the listed value per 100 points in that stat. All bows are 100 Dex, almost all melee weapons are 100 Str, most throwing weapons are 50/50.
* Weapon Speed: A relative comparison to other weapons of the same type. 0 is the base -10, -20, etc is faster, 10, 20, etc is slower, always in increments of 10.
* Range: Melee only. From 1 (least) to 5 (most) in D2X. Numbers are fixed across item classes: a 3 javelin = a 3 sword = a 3 hammer, etc.

=Armor Notes=

* Light Armor: No stamina or speed penalties.
* Medium Armor: +5% stamina drain and speed penalty.
* Heavy Armor: +10% stamina drain and speed penalty.

This is an Expansion-only set.

Crazy Dropper: /* Forgotten Tower */ fix link

{{Item navbox|{{Runes}}}}Finding [[runes]], especially higher level runes, is an obsession for many players. This can be a chore, since there's no way to use equipment to increase your odds of finding more runes, or higher level runes. [[Magic Find]] has no effect on rune drops, either quality or quantity; the way to find runes is to kill lots of [[monster]]s in larger games, so more total [[item]]s drop.

==Monsters==
The best way to find a lot of runes, or most anything else in [[Diablo II]], is to get a lot of item drops. Since item drops are best obtained from dead [[monster]]s, and since monsters drop more items in larger games, a very good way to find more runes is to kill a lot of monsters in games with a lot of other players. (Use [[Player_Settings#The_Players_X_Command|the /players X command]] to simulate more players if you're going single player.)

Rune hunting is somewhat simplified by the fact that [[Magic Find]] is of no benefit (or penalty) to rune finding. So a character truly out to find runes can suit up in all his/her best killing gear, without giving a thought to Magic Find. This isn't highly recommended, since magic find improves the odds of finding [[Unique]] and [[Set]] items that are useful or that can be traded (for runes, perhaps), but purely from a rune hunting point of view, magic find is useless, and worse than useless if using the [[MF]] equipment slows a character's overall killing speed.

Since the goal of most players is to find higher quality runes, the hunting is best done on the highest level monsters that your character can safely and quickly kill. As with magic finding, a balance between killing speed and monster level must be found. Struggling to kill very high level monster because they have a .000001% better chance of dropping a [[Cham]], is not a wise expenditure of time or energy.

Since rune finding is largely a crap shoot, it's best to kill quickly where your character is most capable of killing quickly. Levels with a lot of monsters are best, simply to increase the total item drops. Places like the [[Secret Cow Level]], the [[Flayer Jungle]], or the surface areas of [[Act I|Act One]] (with their teeming [[Fallen]] camps) are popular killing zones due to the high density of fairly weak monsters.

===Special Monsters===
The only monster in the game with a substantially higher % chance to drop runes in [[The Countess]], found on level five of the [[Forgotten Tower]] in the [[Black Marsh]] level of [[Act I|Act One]]. Since [[v1.09]] she's had excellent odds to drop at least one rune every time, and in [[v1.10]] her odds were increased still higher. She can not drop the highest runes in the game, but hoping to see any runes above 24 or 25 (see [[rune list]] for further info) drop is a fool's game. They do fall from time to time, but the odds are lottery-winning low. Better odds are to find lots of runes in the teens and low twenties, and to [[cube]] them up, as well as trading other item finds for mid-to-high level runes, and cubing those up as well.

A few monster types have higher odds of dropping runes because they can not drop [[armor]] or [[weapon]]s, and thus spit out more runes since they have fewer other possible drops. These include [[Wraith]]s, [[Finger Mage]]s, [[Vulture Demon]]s, [[Willowisp]]s, and the [[Swarm]]. These monsters are worth harvesting while rune hunting, but they spawn infrequently and in underwhelming numbers, so few players will find it worth the effort for the slight increase in the odds of finding runes.

==Quests==
Several [[quest]]s grant runes as part of their reward.

===Forgotten Tower===
[[Quests_Act_One#Quest_Four:_The_Forgotten_Tower|This quest]] does not have a [[Rune]] as part of its reward (just a bunch of gold and minor items from a magical chest), but since [[v1.09]] [[The Countess]], a [[SuperUnique]] [[Corrupt Rogue]] you must kill to accomplish the quest, has begun dropping a rune almost every time she's killed. Her rune drops were increased still further in [[v1.10]], and she's now a very popular target for item running characters.

Which runes she can drop vary by difficulty level.
* Normal: [[El]] (r01) - [[Ral]] (r08).
* Nightmare: [[El]] (r01) - [[Io]]/[[Ko]] (r18); above [[Io]] (r16) is much rarer.
* Hell: [[El]] (r01) - [[Ist]]/[[Lo]] (r28); above [[Ist]] (r26) is much rarer.
The Countess has better odds to drop a higher level rune the first time a player kills her on [[Nightmare]] or [[Hell]] difficulties, when they get credit for completing the quest. This is reflected in the different odds for [[Io]]/[[Ko]] and [[Ist]]/[[Lo]] listed above. Her odds of dropping her highest possible runes are always astronomical, but they are slightly better the first time than the other times.

She is capable of dropping up to six runes each death, and will often drop two or three. They're very unlikely to be higher than [[Tir]] or [[Eth]], but reports of two [[Hel]]s, and a couple of other mid-level runes are not uncommon, so it's possible.

===The Hellforge===
When a character shatters [[Mephisto's Soulstone]] on the [[Quests_Act_Four#Quest_Two:_The_Hellforge|Hellforge in Act Four]], four gems and one rune drop as part of the quest reward. The runes that may be found from this quest vary by difficulty level. Which one drops is selected randomly from the following possibilities:
* Normal: [[El]] (r01) - [[Amn]] (r11).
* Nightmare: [[Sol]] (r12) - [[Um]] (r22).
* Hell: [[Hel]] (r15) - [[Gul]] (r25).
Unlike the runes from [[The Countess]], or any other monster drops in the game, the lower level runes are '''not''' more common. The odds for [[Hel]] or [[Gul]] are identical on [[Hell]], 1/11 for each. Cross your fingers.

Be sure to complete this quest when you can get your rune drop, and do not finish it with other players in your party, if they have not finished the quest already. Four gems drop for every character completing the quest, whether they're near the [[Hellforge]] or not, but only one rune will drop for the quest completion, whether one or eight characters are in the party/completing the quest.

===Rescue on Mount Arreats===
This [[Quests_Act_Five#Quest_Two:_Rescue_on_Mt._Arreat|second quest in Act Five]] is easily accomplished, and your character will receive a [[Tal]] (r07), a [[Ral]] (r08), and an [[Ort]] (r09) rune as a reward for completing it. Not a huge reward, but for players who save all their runes to upgrade, every one helps.

==Chests==
[[Chest]]s (this includes barrels, crates, hidden stashes, etc) are an excellent source of items, including runes.

===More Players = More Runes===
More players in the game increase the quantity of items found from [chest]s, by decreasing the odds that the game will select the "NoDrop" option.

Total players in the game (no party) — Chance of non-locked chest to drop nothing at all:
* 1 or 2 — 43,4%
* 3 or 4 — 29.5%
* 5 or 6 — 26,0%
* 7 or 8 — 25,2%

===Rune Quality Increases with Level===
The level that [[chest]]s drop at is determined by the area of the game they're found on; consult the [[Levels]] section for that information. The level of runes that can be found from chests progresses steadily as you move through the game.

The following list details the highest level runes you can find in any area. All of the lower level runes may also be found there, and in fact are far more likely to appear than the higher level ones.

* Act 1 [[Normal]]: No [[Rune]]s from [[Chest]]s
* Act 2 Normal: [[El]]/[[Eld]]/[[Tir]]/[[Nef]] (r01-r04)
* Act 3 Normal: [[Eth]]/[[Ith]]/[[Tal]]/[[Ral]] (r05-r08)
* Act 4 Normal: [[Ort]]/[[Thul]]/[[Amn]]/[[Sol]] (r09-r12)
* Act 5 Normal: [[Shael]]/[[Dol]] (r13-r14)
* Act 1 [[Nightmare]]: [[Hel]]/[[Io]] (r15-r16)
* Act 2 Nightmare: [[Lum]]/[[Ko]] (r17-r18)
* Act 3 Nightmare: [[Fal]]/[[Lem]] (r19-r20)
* Act 4 Nightmare: [[Pul]]/[[Um]] (r21-r22)
* Act 5 Nightmare: [[Mal]]/[[Ist]] (r23-r24)
* Act 1 [[Hell]]: [[Gul]]/[[Vex]] (r25-r26)
* Act 2 Hell: [[Ohm]]/[[Lo]] (r27-r28)
* Act 3 Hell: [[Sur]]/[[Ber]] (r29-r30)
* Act 4 Hell: [[Jah]]/[[Cham]] (r31-r32)
* Act 5 Hell: [[Zod]] (r33)

==Upgrading==
Prior to [[v1.10]], it was hit or miss obtaining runes above [[Ort]], since only the first nine runes could be upgraded in the [[Horadric Cube]]. This changed in v1.10, when [[Rune list|rune upgrade recipes]] were added that could turn [[El]]s into a [[Zod]]. That would take over 14 trillion Els, but it's now possible to upgrade to all levels of runes, which makes collecting and building towards the high level runes the biggest [[Runewords]] require a possibility for all patient players. Mathematically speaking however, expecting to save and transmute the lowest runes into the highest ones is virtually impossible. It would take exactly 3,486,784,401 El runes to make a [[Pul]] rune, which is one of the first highly tradable runes and to create your own Zod from El runes you would need 14,281,868,906,496 El runes and countless gems. If you are looking to make some of the highest runes you are simply wasting your time collecting any of the lower runes.

==Statistics==

Here is some hard statistics in where to find runes.

===Forgotten Tower===
This is the semi-rare runes found when defeating the countess 155 times "/players 1" and with no magic find.
1 x [[Dol]]<br>
4 X [[Io]]<br>
1 x [[Ko]]<br>
1 x [[Fal]]<br>

===Hellforge===
All found in Hell difficulty when clearing the Hellforge quest.
2 x [[Hel]]<br>
Hi Leord, thanks for the greets. This is not my first wiki experience - i've worked on plenty of others including the big one - but I had just re-started my D2 career after a prolonged absence. Pindleskin and his minions are always in the narrow temple that leads to the entrance to the [[Halls of Anguish]]. Though his potential drops have been nerfed a bit since his v1.09 heyday, when he could drop any item in the game, Pindleskin is still one of the most popular "item run" monsters in the game, for his easy access and the fact that he can drop from very high treasure classes. Pindleskin, along with all Reanimated Horde, got a substantially boost to the accuracy and damage of their charge attack in v1.10. This made him very dangerous to any character with less than 1000 hit points, especially when cursed.
Calculators can be used to calculate an exact approximation of what particular monsters will drop, how much damage various attacks will do, and other such interesting and valuable information.

The most popular and accurate calculator is ATMA, which you can [http://atma.diabloii.net/ read about and download here]. In addition to making drop and damage calculations, ATMA allows players to view their single player characters through the application, and even trade items between them. Note that ATMA wasn't updated for patch 1.12.

There are other online calculators and skill planners of varying quality and accuracy, but beware of any other than ATMA that require an installation, or that promise to enable hacking or cheating or that works as trainers; countless players have lost characters or had their accounts hacked after using such third party programs.

Hello.

I'm wondering how exactly are calculated damage with synergies.

For instance, my sorceress has the following levels:
* frozen orb level 12, so 158-163 base damage
* level 1 ice bolt, giving 2% bonus

So the frozen orb damage should be: 161 (158 * 102 / 100) to 166 (163 * 102 / 100). But the damage is shown as 161-171, 5 points more!

I'm also wondering about damage truncation, to lower or upper point? My tests are ambiguous :)

If anyone has any clue, I'd be much thankful.
