Lanthanide: /* Barbarian Merc Names */

Mercenaries are NPCs players can hire to fight alongside them. While Mercenaries were largely a novelty in early versions of Diablo II, they are substantially upgraded in Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, and can be quite effective when properly equipped and supported.

* See the Mercenary Guide for detailed strategy, skill, equipment, and much more information about Mercs.

Mercenaries
There are four types of mercenaries, Rogues (Act 1 archers), Town Guards (Act 2 spear carriers), Iron Wolves (Act 3 sorcerers), and Barbarians (Act 5 warriors). Players can only use one mercenary at a time, and hiring a new one permanently dismisses the current merc.

Mercenaries can be outfitted with weapons (of the appropriate type), body armor, and headgear, and they benefit from most of the same bonuses that your characters enjoy. Mercenaries have inherent stats and bonuses as well, and can survive without quality equipment, though the combat mercs are basically harmless without a good weapon.

In v1.10+, mercs are all available for hire at levels near those of your character. In earlier versions of the game, they were often much lower, and newly hired Mercs had to be leveled up extensively to make them useful and hardy enough to survive, especially when obtained on Hell difficulty.

Act I: Rogue Scouts
Rogue mercenaries are obtained from Kashya in the Rogue Encampment. (She gives one as a reward for completing the Blood Raven quest, and will hire them after that point, or to any character over level 8.) Rogue mercs are ranged attackers who use bows to attack from a distance. They are fairly fragile and must be kept from harm, but can dispense solid artillery support from behind the front lines. Their AI largely keeps them from harm, but they can be come confused as to how far they should stand from the action, and will sometimes wander back and forth uselessly.

These rogues may add fire or cold damage to their arrows; this option is only visible in the hiring window, and makes little difference to their overall damage, though the cold can add a useful chilling effect, especially in the early going when new characters need all the help they can get.

All rogue mercs can cast the Amazon skill Inner Sight. This skill lowers the defense of all enemies by a set amount, and sticks a glowing white dot over their heads.

* Skills: Cold Arrow/Inner Sight or Fire Arrow/Inner Sight
* Allowed Equipment: Armor, Helms, Bows (no Crossbows or Amazon-only bows).

Rogue Merc Names
The names are randomly selected each time a list of mercs for hire is generated; the names do not have any connection to their other abilities or damage types. As is the case with lots of weapons in the game, and especially with the names of NPC mercs, the Blizzard North designers worked in the names of Blizzard employees, and notable members of the Diablo II fan community. This was taken to an extreme with the Rogue mercs, as seemingly every male Blizzard North employee worked in their girlfriend or wife, and every Blizzard North female employee threw in her name or alias. Fans were honored too, Elly and Gaile were webmasters of Diabloii.net, as was Flux (found in Act Three).
Act II: Desert Mercenaries
The Hirelings of Act II are available from Greiz in Lut Gholein. They are melee attackers and use spears/javelins or polearms to great effect. These mercs are the most popular hires in the game, since they come with various auras that can greatly benefit their employer.

Skills: Jab attack.<br>
Auras: These mercs have a variety of auras. There are three types available on each difficulty level, though the auras found on Normal and Hell difficulty levels are the same.

* Combat (Normal): Prayer
* Combat (Nightmare): Thorns
* Combat (Hell): Prayer
* Offense (Nightmare): Might
* Offense (Hell): Blessed Aim

Allowed Equipment: Armor, Helms, Spears, Polearms, Javelins (Used solely for melee melee weapons.) They can not equip Amazon-only javelins or spears.

Desert Mercenary Names
The names are randomly selected each time a list of mercs for hire is generated; the names do not have any connection to their other abilities or aura types. As is the case with lots of weapons in the game, and especially with the names of NPC mercs, the Blizzard North designers worked in the names of Blizzard employees, and notable members of the Diablo II fan community. ==Act III: Iron Wolves==
The Hirelings of Act III are available from Asheara in the Kurast Docks. These are the only magical mercs, and each one specializes in Lightning, Cold, or Fire. Their AI is similar to that of the Rogue mercs and they tend to stay behind the lines and attack from a distance, even though they carry shields and can achieve fairly high defense and resistances.

Spells
Each Iron Wolf is either fire, lightning, or cold based and although they can each use two or three spells, this only adds slightly to their variety.

* Fire: Inferno or Fireball.
* Cold: Glacial Spike, Ice Blast, and Frozen Armor.
* Lightning: Charged Bolt and Lightning Bolt.

The cold are the most popular, since that element has the effect of chilling and slowing targets, but the damage dealt by the three types is equivalent.

Allowed Equipment: Armor, Helms, Shields and Swords

Notes: Iron Wolves very rarely hit anything with their weapon, so are best equipped with a sword that has spell-caster bonuses.

Iron Wolf Names
There are quite a few tongue-twisting names available for Iron Wolves. One is randomly assigned to each of the Iron Wolves your character sees on the hireling menu. As is the case with lots of weapons in the game, and especially with the names of NPC mercs, the Blizzard North designers worked in the names of Blizzard employees, and notable members of the Diablo II fan community. The last 3 Iron Wolf names (they are listed in this order in the game database file, making it clear that the honored fans were added last) are all fans; Jarulf is the author of the famous Diablo guide. Flux was one of the webmasters of Diabloii.net (co-webmasters Elly and Gaile both showed up as Act One rogue mercs). And Scorch was the author of the first monster specialty site, Darkness, which was hosted by Diabloii.net.
Act IV
There are no Mercenaries available for hire in Act Four, though Tyrael will resurrect fallen Mercenaries retained from other acts.

Act V: Barbarians
The Hirelings of Act V are available from Qual-Kehk in Harrogath once you have completed the Rescue the Barbarians quest. Unlike Kashya in Act One, he does not reward you with a free barbarian merc.

* Skills: Bash and Stun
* Allowed Equipment: Armor, Helms, Barbarian Class-specific Helms, One Sword (can't dual wield).

Barbarian Merc Names
The names are randomly assigned to each of the Barbarians when the hireling menu is generated. As with the other mercs, Blizzard North worked a lot of employee and friend names into the list of Barbarians, and honored a few fans as well. Varaya and Khan were two of the best known mod-makers from the days of Diablo, famed for their well-made Lord of the Rings-themed mods. Lanth was another of the early staff members of Diabloii.net, but earned his merc name by being a moderator in the Diabloii.net chat room, which was regularly frequented by Peter Hu (AKA Isolde, see the rogue merc names), the chief architect of the v1.10 patch, in which Lanth's name was added. Lanth also contributed general gameplay feedback, quality of life improvements and other ideas to Peter, many of which made it into the v1.10 patch.
v1.13 Barbarian Merc Name Change
The v1.13 Diablo 2 patch "updated" the names of two of the mercs. As players who dug into the game code informed us:

::In 1.13, MercX136 is called 'Klar', in 1.12 it was 'Weohstan'.
::In 1.13, MercX135 is called 'Tryneus', in 1.12 it was 'Erfor'.

There's not yet any known reason for this change, though speculation is rife. The leading theory is that this is related to some plot/story elements of Diablo 3. We'll see Barbarian NPCs named Klar and Tryneus, or they'll be mentioned in dialogue or otherwise involved. Perhaps they've become leaders of some Barbarian city, in the 20 years between D2X and D3?

The fact that there was a mention of the name update in the patch notes seems to hint that it's important, or at least worth noticing. If Blizzard didn't want players to know about the change, they could have not mentioned it, or simply deleted "Weohstan" and "Erfor" from the list of names if there was a problem with them.

Other theories are less imaginative. Perhaps those are the nicknames of two of the Blizzard v1.13 patch programmers? Maybe the original names are dirty slang in some language? Maybe some Blizzard employee got bored after seeing the same NPC names for 7 years and wanted to make a change?

Act III: Iron Wolves
The Hirelings of Act III are available from Asheara in the Kurast Docks. These are the only magical mercs, and each one specializes in Lightning, Cold, or Fire. Their AI is similar to that of the Rogue mercs and they tend to stay behind the lines and attack from a distance, even though they carry shields and can achieve fairly high defense and resistances.

Spells
Each Iron Wolf is either fire, lightning, or cold based and although they can each use two or three spells, this only adds slightly to their variety.

* Fire: Inferno or Fireball.

* Skills: Bash and Stun

Lanth also contributed general gameplay feedback and ideas to Peter, many of which made it into the v1.10 patch.
v1.13 Barbarian Merc Name Change

Guild Hall, the first shot ever of one. Here we see a Barbarian in a guild hall, or so the caption on the Official Diablo II Site tells us. Obviously the building is in the style of Act One, but it is thought that you will be able to select the tile set of your guild hall, so perhaps there will be one for each act, or more? The chest with universal storage is clearly shown to the top right. Each member of the guild hall will have their own virtual storage chest, much like the stash works in town in each Act, except that the guild hall stash is far larger, comprising multiple pages of items, much like the selection a vendor has. The horned pillar in the back room is assumed to be the Steeg Stone, where guild members could 'donate' gold in order to buy larger guild halls and probably other decorative or functional items like (pure conjecture) larger stash space or dueling areas. The Steeg Stone probably would have also been the way to access the guild's management interface, such as choosing the chevron and guild colours, and displaying the trophy case. It's also interesting that there are open doors with what looks like an accessible area outside. Can you go out and play on the lawn? Or do you just bump into an invisible wall at the door? It was said long ago that Guild Halls would be around 4 screens in size, and this one looks to be just over 1 screen in size, assuming the room with the pillar-shrine is not that large. However this still looks to be plenty of space for 8 or 10 characters to mill around without too much crowding. One curious thing, note that the Barbarian's mini-belt icons are missing the Speak, Trade, and Party Options buttons. Which means that this is a single-player game. There is no reason for a guild hall to exist in a SP game, so this is just the guild hall being tested by Blizzard North, not how it'll be necessarily in the final game. -- 3dfx enhanced shot, 11/99
From my studies, I have deduced that it is Radament the Fallen, an ancient Horadric mummy that has for some reason left his tomb to prey on mortals. I'm doing some more research now. If you check back later, I may have some more insight as to his nature.

I've just been reading something interesting about this sort of undead. Apparently, certain Horadric funereal priests altered the bodies of their dead mages with magical and surgical techniques -- often replacing body parts with those of animals. This was thought to augment their powers, and raise their status in the afterlife.

After Completion
From what you tell me, it would seem that Radament was bent on the task of reviving his own mummified corpse with the flesh of the living. This is very unusual indeed. It takes an incredible magic power to alter the singular purpose of an undead mind. Perhaps there is a power at work here which is beyond my ken.

Only Cain has dialogues about this quest.
The Tainted Sun
Quest Tips
I've been researching this lengthy eclipse and I believe it to be the work of Claw Vipers. Find their temple beneath the desert sands and you may find the source of this curse.

I've discovered a reference to a similar eclipse several hundred years ago. It says that some desert-dwelling snake demons had erected an evil altar, which caused the sun to go black. Perhaps we are dealing with something similar here. Look for an altar in the Claw Viper temple.

After Completion
You did well in destroying the Claw Vipers. We are all glad to see the sun returned to its former glory.

Arcane Sanctuary
Quest Introduction
I've been researching the old records, trying to find the location of Tal Rasha's Tomb. Though I haven't found the Tomb, itself, I may have a good lead for you. The great Vizjerei Summoner, Horazon, built his Arcane Sanctuary somewhere around here. He was a powerful spellcaster and kept demons as slaves within the Sanctuary. He kept a close eye on great events, too -- such as the imprisonment of Baal within Tal Rasha's Tomb. If you could find Horazon's Sanctuary, I'm sure that it would hold some clue as to the Tomb's location. Though I doubt Horazon is still alive, you must proceed with caution. There's no telling what could be waiting inside. When I spoke of this with Lord Jerhyn, he asked that I send you to him. Perhaps he knows of a secret entrance or the like.

Quest Tips
Nearly a thousand years ago, Horazon rose to the fore of the Vizjerei mage clan. Horazon used the knowledge of the Vizjerei to summon and control demons from Hell. Though a powerful Summoner, Horazon feared that the Lords of Hell would punish him for enslaving their brethren. Thus, the Summoner created for himself an Arcane Sanctuary. He believed that his Sanctuary would not only protect him from Hell's vengeance, but also allow him to continue his studies free from the ravages of time and disease. Horazon had crafted many wondrous scrying devices through which he observed the events of the world outside. It is certain that he took careful study of Tal Rasha's imprisonment and recorded the location of his forgotten Tomb. The Arcane Sanctuary was believed to have been constructed here in Lut Gholein. An entrance may be hidden somewhere in the palace, as that building is very old, and was once a Vizjerei fortress.

I am certain that you will find the information you need when you find Horazon's Journal. I suggest you find it quickly, for Diablo may be getting closer to freeing his brother as we speak.

After Completion
You have found Horazon's Journal. Excellent... But, I must caution you. The mark of the True Tomb of Tal Rasha, is sought, if not already known, by Diablo. I needn't elaborate on the implications of that.

The Summoner
Drognan's comments in on this quest make it clear that the Summoner is meant to represent the Sorcerer character from Diablo. Driven mad by the battles he survived in the first game he ventured to Lut Gholeim and became an enemy.

Quest Tips
Yes... The man you speak of sounds like the mage who came here many months ago. He claimed to have fought Diablo in the passages beneath Tristram. No doubt the fool wandered into Horazon's Sanctuary and lost whatever was left of his ravaged mind. He is beyond salvation. It is possible that the fool has been possessed by the spirit of Horazon. If that's true, then you'd better put an end to his tortured existence. Once done, I believe the demons who were summoned and imprisoned within the Sanctuary will cease to exist as well.

After Completion
Larger forces are moving inexorably towards us. You must now make haste to the Tombs.

The Seven Tombs
Quest Tips
Tal Rasha's tomb is hidden deep in the desert among six others. Tal Rasha's symbol marks the True Tomb. If you want to know what that symbol is, you should be able to find it within the legendary Arcane Sanctuary.

After Completion
This is a serious setback... It is most unfortunate that Tal Rasha has been consumed by Baal's destructive influence. There are many secrets known to the Horadrim, which could be used by Baal against us. You must travel east by sea to Kurast and stop Diablo and Baal before they free their eldest brother, Mephisto. Hahh... The lands of the eastern Empire are not the same as they used to be. There has been little word for some time. Speed is of the essence. Go quickly, my friend. May the fates smile on you.

Gossips
The Horadrim were a powerful Order, although maybe too prideful. Tal Rasha was one of their Order. And that should tell you something. Any man who believes himself strong enough to contain one of the Prime Evils is in for a rude awakening, I should think.

I have heard of your friend, Cain. He is the last of the Horadrim. You would do well to heed whatever advice he has to give you.

Not long ago, one of my Vizjerei comrades, who I believed had died in Tristram, came to this city. He seemed quite insane, so I dismissed much of what he said. However, he was able to talk his way into Jerhyn's palace. No one has seen him since. I fear that fool may have found something in the palace that led to his doom.

I've been practicing magic for more years than you could know. I'm older than I look, though not so old that I can't conjure up a few sparks.

Elzix is a sly one, I'll give him that. Of course, he never tries to cheat me. He knows what my magic skills can do.

Demons have spread throughout the desert wasteland and threaten to engulf our quiet port-city.

Meshif and his vessel should remain here, lest we risk taking demonic stowaways to other lands.

When the recent troubles began, Lord Jerhyn came seeking my council. I advised him to close the port and put the town under strict watch. Lately, though, he's been occupied within the palace. I doubt his whores could divert him from his civic duties for this long, though.

Lysander is harmless enough. We keep each other company with our mutual interests, yet I don't think he could handle the enormity of our present situation.

Sorceress only
Many of the Mage Clans feel that women shouldn't practice magic openly. But since you've made it this far, I must say that you have proven your right to do so.

Appearances in Novels
Drognan appears in the novel Legacy of Blood where he aids Norrec in his quest to release the grip of Bartucs armor on him. He plays a major role in finding the Arcane Sanctuary for Norrec by putting him to sleep and directing his dreams towards Horazon and the Arcane Sanctuary (its actually Bartucs memories). He also calls Horazon the greatest Vizjerei mage and that Horazon has lost his mind.

This page lists all the shrines found in Diablo and Hellfire.

Shrines and pools of various types may be found on levels 1-15 in Diablo. There are no shrines of any type on level 16, and none in any of the Hive or Crypt levels added in Hellfire.

Shrines Warning
Unlike the Diablo II shrines, which offer fairly inconsequential, always temporary bonuses, several shrines in Diablo and Hellfire will <u>permanently</u> damage your character, lowering their mana pool in irreparable fashion. It is therefore very unwise to click a shrine if you do not know what it does. Expert players never click goat shrines or cauldrons, since their random effect can be deleterious.

Springs and Pools
Purifying Springs and Blood Fountains are the only shrines that can be used more than once. They can each be used endlessly, by all players in the game. (As if your mouse finger wasn't tired enough already?)

No shrines or pools of any type are found in the Hive or Crypt, the dungeons added in Hellfire.

* Purifying Spring: These refill one mana point per click. They are found on levels 1-8 and 13-16
* Blood Fountain: These refill one health point per click. They are found on levels 1-8 and 13-16
* Murky Pool: These grant Infravision, just as if your character had used a scroll of Infravision. One use only.
* Fountain of Tears:These randomly grant +1 to one attribute and -1 to another. If the selected attribute is maxed out, the +1 is wasted.

Goat Shrines and Cauldrons
Goat Shrines and Cauldrons cause one shrine effect at random, selected from all shrines in the game. They do not ever create the effect of a spring or a pool. It is recommended that you not click any of these, since several shrine effects will permanently damage your character or other characters in the game.

* Goat Shrines may be found in levels 2-4 of the Cathedral, and are commonly found levels 5-8 of the Catacombs, always in enclosed rooms and always surrounded by eight goatmen of some type.
* Cauldrons are found randomly spotted around the levels of hell, levels 13-15. (None are found on 16.) They can be useful objects to take cover behind, but be careful you do not click one accidentally while fighting beside it.

Diablo Shrines
The following shrines are found in Diablo and Hellfire. Shrines are only found on dungeon levels 1-8, though cauldrons found on 13-15 give a random shrine effect (and should be avoided).

Eerie, Fascinating, Ornate, and Sacred shrines are the four that permanently damage your character by lowering their potential mana. Beware. For Fascinating, Ornate, and Sacred shrines, it is not worth the tradeoff to gain two levels of a Page 1 spell (Firebolt, Holy Bolt, and Charged Bolt, respectively), as these spells are not very useful in deeper levels of the dungeon anyway.

The Cryptic shrine could be potentially useful in early levels, if you lure a group of melee monsters towards the room where the shrine is contained, then trigger the Nova spell against them. Unfortunately, as most shrines are contained into small rooms, your character more likely might get swarmed and take a lot of damage or get killed, so at best you might takedown a handful of Scavengers or a couple Goatmen. If the Cryptic shrine is in a room with a grate and a door, lure the monsters to the outside of the room, shut the door, and activate the shrine.

These shrines are found only in Hellfire. None of the Diablo shrines are removed or modified in Hellfire, there are just more shrines added into the mix. None of the added Hellfire shrines have permanent detrimental effects, but Murphy's should be avoided and Mendicant's can be annoying to high level characters with a lot of gold in their inventory (The gold lost could take a long time to recover, while the experience gained can be had from just a few monsters, on hell difficulty.)

Jarulf, AKA Pedro Faria, is an amateur programmer and long time Diablo fan. He rose to prominence in the Diablo community in the days shortly after the game's release due to his contributions to numerous Diablo forums, and his encyclopedic knowledge of the game. Jarulf was one of the pioneers in extracting information directly from the game files, and he shared it freely with other players. Eventually he began compiling his information into a guide, which grew and grew to become the accepted reference guide for Diablo and Hellfire.

The guide is now over 200 pages in Word format, and it contains facts, figures, and formulas for almost everything you could ever want to know about Diablo and Hellfire. Most of the tables, formulas, and figures in this wiki are taken from, or cross-checked with, Jarulf's Guide.

As a measure of his fame in the community, Jarulf was one of the few honored by having his name included in the possible mercenary names in Diablo II.

Drawbacks of the Guide
The sheer size and comprehensiveness of the guide puts some players off. (It's a huge, 4meg, 207+ page Word document.) The guide is not written for beginners; it will do you much more good if you already possess a fairly high level of knowledge about Diablo. You'll also do well to get over any fears you might have of math and formulas, since quite a few of those are presented. The guide can also prove somewhat difficult to navigate since it is, after all, a word document. There aren't internal (or external) hyperlinks, though you can double click items in the table of contents and jump straight to them.

Jarulf's Guide does not contain images, strategies, trivia, external links, or opinions; it's a very encyclopedia-styled document, presented in straight Word format. It's a reference document, one that's best used to check stats or figures or facts. The guide is an invaluable resource, but for everyday use many users prefer websites that present the same (and more) information in a more accessible, paginated, navigable, visual format.

Basic information on gaining experience in Diablo and Hellfire

Experience Gain
In Diablo I and Hellfire, there is no experience penalty for monsters too far above your level. (There is in D2.) There is a cap on the amount that can be gained per kill, in multiplayer at least. It is listed in the table below.

Experience awarded is the monster's experience value (listed on the monster pages) factored into the following equation:
base · (1.0 + 0.1·(mlvl - clvl))
Basically, monsters are worth 10% less for each level the Clvl exceeds the Mlvl. Characters with a Clvl 10 (or more) above the monster's level will receive no experience for the kill.

Experience Guidelines
Higher level monsters are always worth more experience, though this is often limited by the max exp cap in multiplayer. Low level characters will level up much more quickly if they continually descend deeper into the dungeon; though it's practically impossible to kill the monsters encountered, if you descend too quickly. (Barring twinked items.)

A rule of thumb:
* Clvl 20-25: Maximum experience in Hell or Crypt/Normal, Cats and deeper/Nightmare, and anywhere in Hell.
* Clvl 26-30: Sub-max experience in Crypt or Hell/Normal. Maximum in Caves, Hive, Hell, Crypt/Nightmare. Anywhere in Hell.
* Clvl 30-40: Minimal experience in Normal. Diminishing experience in Hell and Crypt/Nightmare. Maximum experience in Cats, Cave, Hive, Hell, Crypt/Hell. (Diminishing in Cats in the high 30s, but killing is so fast there with good spells that it's often still worth it.)
* Clvl 40+: Only Hell difficulty is useful for experience now. Diminishing gains in Hive and Caves, full in Hell and Crypt. Upper levels of Hell and Crypt start to be less than full into the high 40s.

Experience Requirements
Players must satisfy the following requirements to gain experience from a monster's death. The player must remain alive and on the same level between the time the requirements are met and the time the monster is killed, to gain experience.

* Killing the monster (melee, bow, or with a spell).
* Having your golem kill or deal damage to the monster.
* Dealing any damage to a monster that another player kills.
** Hitting a monster with an element that it's immune to does not deal any damage.
** Using Stone Curse does not deal damage or count towards gaining experience.
** Monsters killed by a Berserk monster (in Hellfire) do not give experience.
* Using Telekinesis on the monster. (Deals no damage, but still works.)
** Snotspill, Gharbad the Weak, Zhar the Mad, the Warlord of Blood, Lachdanan, Arch-Bishop Lazarus, Blackjade, and Red Vex are all immune to Telekinesis.

Hellfire Changes
Experience awarded for monsters from Diablo is unchanged in Hellfire. As for the new Hellfire monsters; those found in the Hive are equivalent to those in the Caves, and those found in the Crypt are equivalent to those in Hell.

Experience Tables
Adapted from Jarulf's Guide, with some added comparative statistics.

* Max exp: Experience is capped in multiplayer at Clvl * 200, past Clvl 5. There is no such cap in single player, so leveling up is much faster, especially at higher levels.

* Kills: How many kills of monsters worth the maximum experience would be required to level up. At low levels this is not feasible (barring super twinked gear) since your low level character can not hit or survive against monsters of high enough level to be worth the maximum experience. Even finding the stairs down to the next dungeon level without killing more sub-max exp monsters isn't possible.

* Total Kills: How many monsters worth the maximum experience must be killed to reach that level. This isn't feasible at low levels, for reasons detailed previously.

* Levels: There are about 180 monsters per dungeon level, after the slightly smaller levels 1 and 2. This figure gives you a rough idea how many levels you'll need to fully clear out to level up. For example, to go from Clvl 40 to 41 requires 6212 kills, which = about 34.5 dungeon levels, or about 9 games clearing out Hell (Dlvls 13-16).

This page houses general information about the monsters in Diablo and Hellfire. Click to the individual monster pages for full stats and images, along with some strategy and other tidbits. See chapter 5 in Jarulf's Guide for even more detailed formulae than this wiki provides.

Monster Type
Monsters in Diablo and Hellfire are divided into three types: Animals, Demons, and Undead. The type of a given monster is generally easy to tell in Diablo, though the lines are more blurred in Hellfire's bestiary. Generally speaking, Undead are skeletons and zombies, Animals are lower life forms like scavengers, bats, goatmen, etc, and Demons are the more advanced humanoid enemies like Knights and Mages. The monster type is listed on every individual monster page and every boss page, since it matters what they are. These different types are not just the answers to trivia questions either, a monster's type has a considerable effect on how much damage it takes from different types of melee weapons.

Weapon Type
Animals
Demons
Undead
Swords
align="center" | 150% damage
align="center" | 100% damage
align="center" | 50% damage
Clubs
align="center" | 50% damage
align="center" | 100% damage
align="center" | 150% damage
Axes/Bows/Staves/Hands/Feet/Magic
align="center" | 100% damage
align="center" | 100% damage
align="center" | 100% damage

Monster type also determines if a monster will take damage from the spell Holy Bolt. Only undead monsters (and Diablo) take damage from it; other monsters can not be touched at all by the spell. Also, some weapons (mostly Uniques) have higher AC or deal bonus damage against one type of monster. For instance,Bloodslayer, the unique broad axe, deals 200% damage to Demons.

To summarize: swords deal 50% bonus damage to Animals and have a 50% penalty against Undead. Blunts are just the opposite. Both deal 100% damage to Demons. In effect this favors swords, since there are no Undead found past the Catacombs (Dlvl 5-8) in Diablo. The Caves are about evenly divided between Animals and Demons, and then Hell is almost entirely Demons (with one or two Animals). Since swords do higher base damage to begin with, the fact that they have an additional bonus to Animals, and that there aren't any Undead later in the game (in Diablo) makes Swords a much better long term choice. Blunts are a better choice early on though, especially against large packs of undead, such as the Skeleton King's.

This is not the case in Hellfire, since the monsters in the Hive and Crypt are (roughly) divided between the three monster types. However, since this means that the monster type bonuses even out, and since the bastard sword has the highest base melee damage of any one-handed weapon, swords are still king. (Assuming the modifiers on the weapons are roughly equivalent.)

Since Axes, Bows, Staves, and all spells (save for Holy Bolt) deal 100% damage to everything, this distinction is largely irrelevant to Monks, Rogues, Barbarians, and Sorcerers.

Hover Information
Monsters in Diablo and Hellfire immediately display their names when hovered on, and the game keeps track of how many of that monster you have killed in that game. (The counter will run for multiple games in the same multiplayer play session.) Information about their resistances and immunities is displayed once you have 15 kills, and after 30 kills you are shown the hit points for that monster type.

Incidentally, the resistances and immunities are correctly displayed, but the hit points are only approximate, and are considerably inaccurate on Nightmare and Hell, thanks to various bugs in the way the game adds extra hit points for higher difficulty levels. The basic problem is that the hit points displayed are pulled from one data table, but it's not the same data as that which the game actually uses to create the monsters. The actual, accurate, hit points are displayed in the tables on the various monster pages in this wiki.

Monster Attack Type
Monsters are divided into different types, and each type has its own AI for movement, attacking, retreating, and so forth. These types are not specifically defined by the game, but are easy to envision if you've played a fair amount. Players just "know" how skeletons, or goat men, or drakes, behave. This table lists which monsters use which type of AI, and since there are fewer types of AI than there are monsters, some monsters use the AI of another creature. Monsters with the same behavior type may still differ; some spell-casters move the same, but use different spells which changes the feel of the battle; Diablo uses the AI of a Magma Demon, for instance. Monster behavior changes with distance; Balrogs behave like Skeletons until they are within 3 squares of a character.

* Monster behavior does not change with difficulty level.
* All monsters of the same type use the same behavior, though their IntF rating affects how quickly they react to stimuli. IntF is listed on the individual monster and boss pages.
* Some boss monsters use the behavior of a different type of monster. Those are listed on the individual SuperUnique pages.
** The minions of a boss monster use the same behavior as their boss. Even when it's different than their usual type behavior.
* All Hellfire monsters use the behavior type as one of the Diablo monsters. (Usually skeleton, which is why most Hellfire monsters seem pretty boring with their default "walk straight at the enemy" movement.)

Diablo introduced the world of Sanctuary, the humans within it, and the powerful forces of Angels and Demons hovering forever just beyond the veil. The plot of the game of Diablo is revealed during the course of play, by NPC dialogues which are supplemented by the histories and legends related by various books and tomes found through the course of exploring the dungeons.

There are two types of stories told by the books and tomes.

# Histories left by the Horadrim mages. These are ancient tomes and they speak of historical and cosmological matters, introducing the reader to the cosmic struggle between the forces of the Heavens and the Hells.
# Diary style entries written by Archbishop Lazarus. These confessionals tell the story that led up to events in Diablo, and supplement what the NPCs tell about the plot events of the game.

The dialogues presented in these books is quoted in full on this page.

Horadric Histories
Books written by the ancient Horadrim mages, who built the catacombs beneath Tristram and buried the soulstone containing Diablo's essence deep within the labyrinth. There is some overlap between the books, as they describe the same events from slightly different perspectives or time frames.

These books can be found only on levels 4, 8 and 12 of the Crypt, Catacombs and Caves respectively.

The Great Conflict
::Take heed and bear witness to the truths that lie herein, for they are the last legacy of the Horadrim. There is a war that rages on even now, beyond the fields that we know -- between the utopian kingdoms of the high Heavens and the chaotic pits of the burning Hells. This war is known as the Great Conflict, and it has raged and burned longer than any of the stars in the sky. Neither side ever gains sway for long as the forces of light and darkness constantly vie for control over all creation.

The Sin War
::Take heed and bear witness to the truths that lie herein, for they are the last legacy of the Horadrim. When the eternal conflict between the high heavens and the burning hells falls upon mortal soil, it is called the Sin War. Angels and Demons walk amongst humanity in disguise, fighting in secret, away from the prying eyes of mortals. Some daring, powerful mortals have even allied themselves with either side, and helped to dictate the course of the Sin War.

The Prime Evils
::So it came to be that three prime evils were banished in spirit form to the mortal realm and after sewing chaos across the East for decades, they were hunted down by the cursed order of the mortal Horadrim. The Horadrim used artifacts called Soulstones to contain the essence of Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred, and his brother Baal, the Lord of Destruction. The younger brother –- Diablo, The lord of Terror -- escaped to the West.

::Eventually the Horadrim captured Diablo with a Soulstone as well, and buried him under an ancient, forgotten cathedral. There, the Lord of Terror sleeps and awaits his time of rebirth. Know ye that he will seek a body of youth and power to possess -- one that is innocent and easily controlled. He will then arise to free his brothers and once more fan the flames of the Sin War...

Lazarus' Grimoire
Diary style entries left by the Archbishop, telling how Diablo was freed from the soulstone and returned to power in the body of Prince Albrecht. These books are found in random locations only on levels 4, 8 and 12 of the Crypt, Catacombs and Caves respectively.

The Realms Beyond
::All praises to Diablo, Lord of Terror and survivor of the Dark Exile. When he awakened from his long slumber, my Lord and Master spoke to me of secrets that few mortals know. He told me that the kingdoms of the High Heavens and the Pits of the Burning Hells engage in an eternal war. He revealed the powers that have brought this discord to the realms of man. My lord has named the battle for this world and all who exist here the Sin War.

Tale of the Three
::Glory and approbation to Diablo, the Lord of Terror and leader of The Three. My lord spoke to me of his two brothers, Mephisto and Baal, who were banished to this world long ago. My lord wishes to bide his time and harness his awesome power so that he may free his captive brothers from their tombs beneath the sands of the East. Once my lord releases his brothers, the Sin War will once again know the fury of The Three.

The Black King
::"Hail and sacrifice to Diablo, Lord of Terror and Destroyer of Souls. When I awoke my master from his sleep, he attempted to possess a mortal's form. Diablo attempted to claim the body of King Leoric, but my master was too weak from his imprisonment. My lord required a simple and innocent anchor to this world, and so found the boy Albrecht perfect for the task. While the good King Leoric was left maddened from my lord's unsuccessful possession, I kidnapped his son Albrecht. I now await Diablo's call and pray that I will be rewarded when he at last emerges as the lord of this world.

Hellfire Lore
Blizzard did not provide additional lore or story to the Sierra developers to work into Hellfire. As a result there are no books or tomes that tell more of the Sin War, or any other events in the Diablo canon. There are some lore books to be found in Crypt levels in Hellfire, but these are original to that game and not part of the overall Diablo story.

The Hellfire tomes relate entirely to the plot of Hellfire, which revolves around a powerful mage summoning the demon Na-Krul. The demon was too powerful for the mage to control, and as the mage felt himself losing control, he took the time to write long, grammatically correct journal entries, which he left on huge book stands spread throughout his dungeon.

There are also three scraps of paper, which, when combined, form one readable note that tells how to weaken Na-Krul by releasing him by pulling three levers in the proper order, instead of just throwing the main switch to his vault.

Cornerstone of the World
This object is found on the first level of the Crypt. Its function is to transfer items between single player Hellfire characters, but it has some lore attached to it as well. See the Cornerstone of the World page for more details about how to use it. Here's the lore revealed by dropping an item on the active square itself.

::And in the year of the golden light, it was so decreed that a great cathedral be raised. The cornerstone of this holy place was to be carved from the translucent stone Antyrael, named for the angel who shared his power with the Horadrim. In the year of drawing shadows, the ground shook and the cathedral shattered and fell. As the building of catacombs and castles began and man stood against the ravages of the Sin War, the ruins were scavenged for their stones. And so it was that the cornerstone vanished from the eyes of man.

::The stone was of this world - and of all worlds - as the light is both within things and beyond all things. Light and unity are the products of this holy foundation, a unity of purpose and a unity of possession.

Reconstructed Note
Assembling the three parts of this note isn't exactly a quest, but this wiki hosts a quest page that covers it. The note is found in three scraps, one each on levels 1, 2, and 3 of the Crypt. Once all three parts have been found they automatically combine into the reassembled note, which can be read to learn more information about Na-Krul and how to weaken him before releasing him.

:Whoever finds this scroll is charged with stopping the demonic creature that lies within these walls. My time is over. Even now, its hellish minions claw at the frail door behind which I hide.

:I have hobbled the demon with arcane magic and encased it within great walls, but I fear that will not be enough.

:The spells found in my three grimoires will provide you protected entrance to this domain, but only if cast in their proper sequence. The levers at the entryway will remove the barriers and free the demon; touch them not! Use only these spells to gain entry or his power may be too great for you to defeat.

:To weaken Na-Krul, read the books in front of his chamber in this order:<br>
::in spiritu sanctum<br>
::praedictum otium<br>
::efficio obitus ut inimicus

These books are found in random locations on different levels, order, as you descend through the dungeons.

::in spiritu sanctum<br>
::praedictum otium<br>
::efficio obitus ut inimicus
Combat Stats
All mages have the ability to cast Flash, which deals magical damage. This spell is only cast when a character (or golem) is at melee range, and their Flash spells deal very low damage.
* Counselors cast Firebolts as their primary attack. (Fire damage.)
* Magistrates cast Charged Bolt as their primary attack. (Lightning damage.)
* Cabalists cast Lightning Bolt as their primary attack. (Lightning damage.)
* Advocates cast Fireball as their primary attack. (Fire damage.)
The listed damages for the mages in Jarulf's Guide are meaningless numbers, and do not correspond to the damage of their spells in the game. We've listed those useless numbers again here... well, we're not quite sure why. Trivia?

A general guide: Counselors can be largely ignored by any character with good fire resistance, except in huge concentrations. Magistrates are not very damaging to characters with lightning resistance, but their bolts can be annoying since they bounce around and linger for so long, and because they cause characters to react with their hit animation, which interrupts the combat. Cabalists aren't very damaging with their lightning bolts, but can be dangerous in large groups. Advocates are the real danger, even to characters with maximum fire resistance. Warriors and Sorcerers can survive fairly well with their high hit points and magic (and mana shield) but Rogues, and Hellfire Monks and Bards must be very careful not to get popped by 3 or 4 Fireballs in close sequence, since they can deal upwards of 100 damage each.
Movement Speed
Characters walk at 0.4 speed. See the Diablo Characters page other swing speeds, casting speeds, and other useful character speed break points.

* Mages do not walk; they only move by teleport, usually when they are threatened by melee attacking characters.
** The 1 second value is for their fade in/out animation.
* Since mages hit recovery time is 0.40, attacks must be faster than this to stun lock them so they can not teleport. This is why Warriors need a sword of speed/haste, and why rogues can not stunlock mages with any melee weapon (but can with bows).
* *Zhar the Mad is quest monster Counselor who has the special ability to shoot Firebolts (rather than Fireballs). He's found on level 8 (single player quest only).
* **Advocates are only found on level 15 in multiplayer; 4 of them are located within Lazarus' altar room.
** Advocates are not found on level 15 in single player, but are found on Lazarus' special sub-level (single player only).
