Trucidation: update after long hiatus

Hello folks. I'm the bloke who wrote the original median wiki on the gaming wikia (medianxl.wikia.com). The problem with porting those pages here is that I didn't realize diablowiki here doesn't have the HeadingA custom template, and I'm loath to give them up to use simple "== xyz ==" section headings. So I used a table as a kludge.

Problem with that, is that it won't generate the auto contents list like section headings would. I'm no wiki wizard, and when I looked around diablowiki's Help:Editing page is blank D: No help there. I suppose I could hardcode sections in the other pages, they'd look ok but you just won't be able to click on them. Better than nothing I guess.

Ah crap, I haven't gotten to the columned stuff yet D: It's not a big problem if diablowiki doesn't support them, but some pages will appear longer - and the main point of this introductory wiki was to give only the basics. I don't want to scare off new players with omgwtfbbq walls of text. Which I'm doing now, argh. Ok, I'll shut up.

Oh yes and we need a category for mods.

- Trucidation 09:57, 1 May 2009 (CEST)

Alright, I screwed up. Created a category with a spelling mistake ("mods" was capitalized). There was no way to rename or move it, so I had to recreate it. However, the original one remains - how do I get rid of it?

- Trucidation 10:27, 1 May 2009 (CEST)

Gonna over the 3 remaining pages. The troublesome ones, i.e. mercs, class & skills, and cube recipes. I just remembered I hardcoded the bgcolors in those tables though. And there's a truckload of them. Argh.

- Trucidation 16:57, 1 May 2009 (CEST)

Wow, this thing is still around. And with more recent edits after mine too :P Thanks guys, especially the Blizzard stuff - it's great. I just happened to check this page due to the recent Wikia issue which is causing a mass exodus from the site, and I remembered I had some old wikis on it, including this one. I'd actually forgotten that I'd ported this particular wiki here. Anyway, thanks for preserving it. It's been a long while since I touched Diablo 2 sadly, and I'm kinda busy with PS2 stuff now that I have a decent gaming laptop. Still, feel free to post here, etc etc. I also check my email albeit kinda sporadically (once a week or so). I'm actually sorta waiting for Diablo 3, heh, but iirc that's still quite a ways off even now (Dec 2010). Well, see you guys around. - Trucidation 15:07, 20 December 2010 (UTC)

Oh, and can we please have proper section headers, so that diablowiki can generate the auto content list on top? I'm using tables (of all things) to replace wikia custom headers, simply because they look closest to what I had on wikia. I can't stand the blandness of the == headers. This has the effect of rendering the wiki unable to generate the content list - pretty obvious, because of course it can't tell which tables are mimicking headers. Shrug. They oughtta put together a heading thingy template, it'll make all our lives easier. Yes, I did try to search for what wikia used. Guess what, the page was deleted. While fixing the gems page I figured out the table width thing. However, do we really need to fix these? With fixed width columns we'll be seeing loads of sentences wrapping around to another line. The "unbalanced" look of dynamic columns doesn't really bother me, at least not on this page. I think they look fine as they are, so I'm not fix the column widths.

Median XL contains the standard Diablo 2 gems with new bonuses, as well as 5 additional gem types and 20 additional runes. Also, since sockets can now appear on other armor pieces (gloves, belts, boots), the gem and rune effects for those pieces share the same effect as on armor. So for example if gem X gives life when used on weapons, mana on armor, and resistances on shields, if you slot it into a belt you will get the armor effect (mana).
Gemwords

Gemwords are similar to Runewords, involving gems instead of runes. To make a gemword, use a grey (i.e. nonmagical, socketed) item, and put jewels into all sockets except one. Then fill that last socket with a gem. The resulting item will have the jewels' and gem's bonus as expected, with one difference: the gem bonus is multiplied by (number of sockets + 1).

; Example:
Grey long war bow (4 sockets) + 3 jewels + 1 flawless Ruby
Bonus: jewel bonuses + (flawless Ruby bonus x5)
From the gem descriptions above, we see that socketing ruby gems on weapons grant +X Life after each kill, and from the official website we find that for flawless quality the value of X is 8. Thus, this gemword will give you the jewel bonuses and +(8 x5) Life after each kill (or +40 Life after each kill).

As you can see, gemwords provide an affordable option for even low level characters who have specific bonus needs without having to sacrifice a lot of power to obtain them. Unlike runewords though, gemwords are not keyed with particular names - on the item you create, only the text "Gemword!" will appear in light bronze.

Items with only one socket may also have a gemword. In this case you don't need any jewels (only room for a gem, after all), and the resulting bonus is simply (1 + 1) = 2 times the bonus of the gem.

Runes

For the full runes list, please see the official website.

Special note: The three Greater Runes are not obtainable from the simple Horadric Cube upgrade recipe, nor can they be downgraded. They are level 100, and can only be found in the Faustinville uberlevel on Destruction difficulty.

*Taha
:Weapons - +40 to Maximum Damage
:Armor - +20 to Maximum Damage
:Shields - +20 to Maximum Damage

*Ghal
:Weapons - +15 Energy Factor to Spell Damage
:Armor - +5 Energy Factor to Spell Damage
:Shields - +5 Energy Factor to Spell Damage

*Qor
:Weapons - -12% Requirements
:Armor - -12% Requirements
:Shields - -12% Requirements

Runewords

As with gemwords, runewords can only be created in grey (nonmagical, socketed) items. Similarly, each runeword actually only requires one rune! However, this does not mean you can only make runewords in items with only one socket: just as with gemwords before, you fill up the other sockets with jewels first, and then only do you insert the rune into the final socket to get your runeword.

So how can Median XL sport 250+ runewords when each runeword consists of only 1 rune, and that there are fewer than that number of basic runes? Easy. The runeword you obtain is different depending on what base item you socket it into. For example, the rune Dol will result in the runeword Enyo when socketed into a weapon, Outlaw when socketed into boots, and Asmodai when socketed into a Paladin Shield.

Also, just as with gemwords, you still obtain the jewel bonuses on top of that! So your runeword item isn't necessarily the same as everybody elses'. In fact you may even find better jewels later to create a more powerful item of the same runeword :)

Finally, the list of runewords is even longer than the list of runes, so please refer to the official website for complete details.

This page contains a short summary of each character class and their skills. For the full descriptions, please see the official website at http://modsbylaz.planetdiablo.gamespy.com/
All skill trees are arranged in a linear cascade - there are no branching trees. This does not mean the mod has less customized skill builds compared to the original game, you can still take skills from other skilltrees as long as the prerequisites are met.

Generally, each class has three skill tabs. The first one, the "base" skill tab shares the same skill tab as the class uberskills. The other two skill tabs are usually divided into specialized functions, and there may be other restrictions between them, such as the Paladin's need to pick between the Light and Dark skillsets, or the Sorceress' restriction to two out of four elements.

The topmost skill tier has a level requirement of 1, and following that the next skills are available at levels 6, 12, 18, and 24. The uberskills have a level requirement of 90 (in addition to their challenge requirements). The Ennead and Black Road challenges rewards skills are also listed under uberskills, as they too have a level requirement of 90.

Each skill has a level cap which you must reach in order to put more points into it. For example, if you have saved up 10 skill points, you cannot immediately dump all 10 of them into a skill when you level up enough to reach it. However, there are skills and and even item mods which can raise this cap for you.

P.S. The official website does not name the skill trees; these are taken from inside the game itself.

Mercenaries, hirelings - gotta love 'em. Median XL has not forgotten about these trusty allies, and they have been given a much-needed makeover in order for them to continue serving you well.

Basic tips

*Damage is good, but a dead mercenary deals none. Therefore, don't forget to equip them with gear that has good defence and resistances.

*The Act 3 mercenaries already have high energy and energy factor, so to really amp up their damage output give them gear with +x% to Spell Damage, -x% to Enemy Resistances, and +x to All Skills. Elemental damage buffs like Bloodlust and Elemental Totem also help them.

*Sometimes a mercenary will stop doing anything. A known game (not mod) bug which occasionally happens when you walk. To fix this, simply use a town portal.

*Mercenaries need a little time to warm up into their battle mindset - don't worry if they seem to start slowly.

Argh.
Edit: I'm aware there was a somewhat well-known figure in the Diablo community a while back who went by this handle. Wrote something on Amazons, if I remember correctly. Well, that person isn't me. Sorry I hijacked this name by accident, but I didn't realise it was taken. I've been using this nick since my MUD days (that ought to give you a hint at how old I am) though, and I'm too lazy to change it. I might, if that Trucidation shows up and demands it. It's just a name; I'll change it if I have to, but since it's too much effort and nobody's come to claim it yet I'll stick with it.
What is a mod?

While it changes aspects of the game, a mod is not a cheat - cheats aim to make the player's life easier while keeping the game intact. A mod changes the game itself, and generally speaking one of the main aims of a mod is usually to make the game harder. The changes may be very minor and insignificant (e.g. changing caps to look like afros), or major (e.g. giving monsters new skills).

Median XL is a mod which makes extensive changes to many features of the game, including the character classes, monsters, and items. The information in this section of the wiki regarding the mod applies only to the mod, and not to the original game. In case you were actually looking for information on the original game, click here to return to the Diablo 2 wiki main page.
Some things will be deliberately left out in the interests of keeping the articles short to avoid overwhelming people with information.

What you won't find here is a listing for every single new monster, item, cube recipe, or quest. That's what the official website is for. Once you are a little familiar with the mod, head there to get the scoop on everything.

Gems

Unfortunately, the new gem types are not considered as gems in some parts of the game; for example, you cannot upgrade them with Gem Shrines. This is a game limitation (not mod).

From the official website, we find that ruby gems on weapon grant +X Life after each kill, and that for flawless quality the value of X is 8. Thus, this gemword will give you the jewel bonuses and +(8 x5) Life after each kill (+40 Life after each kill). Not bad for a simple gem + jewels + socketed item.

Median XL is a mod for Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction. It changes many features of the original game - basically, it revamps nearly everything. The following is a rundown of the more visible changes in the game.

Class changes and improvements
Each character class now gains life, mana, and stamina at different rates. Plus, the maximum character level is now 120. Also, who remembers the bug in the original game where your entire defence stat was ignored when you run? Pretty bad, right? The bug hasn't been fixed, but this problem has been gotten around simply by increased walk speed.

Entirely new skill trees
The mod features all-new skills for every class - every single skill and skill tree has been completely overhauled. Each class now has 25 main skills, 3 uberskills, and 2 challenge reward skills. Rest assured, the skills have been playtested extensively - no more 75% useless skill trees and everyone from class X abusing skill Y. Also, spell damage is now affected by energy ("energy synergy").

Blocking and Energy Factor
In the classic game, max block (75%) was ridiculously easy to attain, while defence was hardly worth investing in (exarcebated by the running defence bug). In the mod, defence now matters, and block% on items has been greatly toned down - but you can still achieve good blocking by pumping dex heavily. Energy factor is a bonus multiplier that boosts spell damage the more energy you have.

Improved Casting Speed
Caster characters (druids, necromancers, sorceresses) cast their spells faster when using staves.

Monster changes

Improved bestiary
Monsters have been improved a lot. They are more aggressive and dangerous compared to the original game's monsters. Many of them have had extensive modifications to their appearances, animation, statistics, and skills. You want a challenge, and Median XL delivers!

Elite and Heroic monsters
These are special monster spawns that feature enhanced versions of the monsters they are based on. Naturally, they give you better rewards for slaying them.

New challenges
Veteran players no longer need stand around bored doing endless boss runs. On top of the 25 new superunique encounters and 21 special uberbosses, there are now special challenges for experienced players.

Item changes

New base items
The items in the game have been improved upon - you will see far less useless stuff. Additionally, item stats have been rebalanced and reworked into six different quality tiers, each with better stats than the last. There are also special items which are even stronger than these. Finally, many animations have been speed-tweaked to encourage unusual weapons, so that not everyone from class X feels forced to use weapon type Y.

Sacred Items
Sacred items are more powerful than the regular 6-tier quality items, but are hard to find and have high requirements. They cannot be gambled. They are also the only types of items which can be crafted, turned into honorific items, or be part of an item set. Sacred items also have their own uniques.

New set and unique items
The mod features all-new special items, with 470+ uniques and 28 new sets. Unique items may drop anywhere in the game, whereas set items have been revamped completely - they are all sacred-type (and thus cannot be gambled) and considered to be equipment for high level characters only. As such, set items only spawn in the special level 121 areas.

Sockets
Sockets are much more plentiful. The socket count of an item is usually equal to the number of slots the item takes up, although lower tier quality items have a lower max socket count. Gloves, belts, and boots may also have sockets. All tiered and sacred items have a 25%-50% chance to spawn with a random number of sockets. Uniques, sets, crafted, and honorific items spawn with max sockets.

Enhanced affix pool
Tired of itty-bitty +1 hp kind of bonuses? Median XL features an improved affix pool, which results in stronger and better items. There are even item-specific skills as well as percentage-based bonuses, making magic and rare items a more useful and viable option for all characters.

New gems and runes
There are now more base gem types, and they have all been improved. Ditto for runes. The runeword list has been revamped entirely - the list stands at 490 runewords, currently - and there now exists gemwords. Gemwords are an affordable low level option for characters who are looking for a more specific bonus, such as a particular resistance. Everything is useful now!

Rebalanced drop rates
What good is an item if you will never see it in your lifetime? Drop rates have been fixed so that you may actually see a Zod rune now, among other things.

Cube changes

New Horadric Cube recipes
There are far many more uses for the Horadric Cube than ever. You can upgrade items, add enchantments, strip all enchantments, drill sockets, remove socketed items, and craft new items, just to mention a few of the uses. Also, the Horadric Cube is a necessary component in completing the various high level challenges in the game - make sure you bring your cube along, and take care that isn't filled with clutter!

Crafting Points
A new type of requirement is now required for pulling off higher-tier recipes: Crafting Points. Crafting Points are available as affixes on equipment, and you must be wearing them at the time of attempting a recipe which has a crafting point requirement. So don't be too quick to junk that equipment with crafting points on it, you may need it sometime later.

Misc

Level design changes
Some of the more annoying large maps have been reduced in size. Mood lighting improved for many maps (remember to play in fullscreen, Direct3D mode). Also, aside from the monster population rebalance, there are now several bonus levels associated with the new uberbosses, as well as 8 special uberlevels for high level characters.

Hireling fixes
In line with the skill changes, the hireable mercenaries feature entirely new skillsets. They have also been beefed up to keep up with the new difficulty. Check out the improved mercenaries here.

This is what you must have installed in order to play Median XL.

* the Diablo 2 game
* the Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction expansion
Basic FAQ

Q: I have the classic Diablo 2 game, but I don't have the Lords of Destruction expansion, can I still play Median XL?
A: No - Median XL is an expansion game mod.

Q: Will characters from the original game / Median 2008 / [other mods] work in Median XL?
A: No, Median XL uses its own characters.

Q: Will cheats / maphack / bots work with Median XL?
A: No. Median XL is a mod, not godmode.

Q: Is the PlugY addon supported?
A: Yes - see the mini guide section Using PlugY below.

Q: Why don't I see the special effects like shown in the official website screenshots?
A: You must be playing in fullscreen, Direct3D mode.

Q: Is multiplayer supported?
A: Yes. The game's netcode has not been changed in any way. Obviously, the official Blizzard battle.net servers don't have the mod installed on them, so you can't play Median XL in closed battle.net. However, you can still play in open battle.net as well as direct TCP/IP mode. Please make sure everyone is using the exact same version of the mod. If you are playing on open battle.net, at the very least password-protect your game so that non-mod players will not accidentally join and crash your game.

Using the PlugY addon

PlugY is a very handy addon that enhances your stash by adding "page tabs", so instead of one single stash area, you can flip forward to additional pages and keep more items. The maximum number of pages is 2^32, so for all practical purposes you have near-infinite stash space. What's more, PlugY also allows you to toggle between that character's personal stash, as well as a shared stash which other characters on your computer can access.

NOTE: PlugY has not been updated to support the latest game version (1.12 currently), so keep your upgrade at 1.11b at most. Finally, when using PlugY with Median XL, you need a clean d2gfx.dll - in case you were using a modded version (for example, a multi-instance-enabled one), revert to the original file before you attempt to install PlugY.

When you install PlugY, change the default install-to folder from \Mod PlugY\ up one folder to the main D2 game folder - i.e., instead of \Games\Diablo 2\Mod PlugY\, install to \Games\Diablo 2\. After installation, from now on launch the game using the PlugY executable instead of your old game shortcut. If you did it successfully, you should see PlugYs version information on the lower right side of D2's main menu screen.

PlugY supports many other features. However, the great majority of them are tuned towards "exporting" battle.net realm features into singleplayer mode, such as making Ladder runewords available, and activating realms quests. Since Median XL has changed nearly all of those features, trying to activate them may result in character corruption. To avoid losing your characters or breaking your game installation, stick to using the stash features. The good news is the default installation only has the stash features active when you install PlugY after Median XL, so you don't need to do anything else. Just install PlugY and change the game shortcut, and you're all set.

What is a mod?

A mod is not a cheat, nor is it a miserable little pile of secrets. Cheats aim to make the player's life easier while keeping the game intact. A mod changes the game itself. The changes may be very minor and insignificant (e.g. changing caps to look like afros), or major (e.g. changing actual character skills).

Median XL is a mod which makes extensive changes to the game. As such, any information in this section of the wiki regarding the mod applies only to the mod, not to the original game. What you'll find here is an introduction to the Median XL mod for new players who just heard of but know nothing about it. What does this mod do? and Where do I start? are common questions which will be addressed with brief, to-the-point summaries.

Median XL is a mod which makes extensive changes to the game. As such, any information in this section of the wiki regarding the mod applies only to the mod, not to the original game. If you are looking for information on the original game, click here to return to the Diablo 2 wiki main page.

What you'll find here is an introduction to the Median XL mod for new players who just heard of but know nothing about it. What does this mod do? and Where do I start? are common questions which will be addressed with brief, to-the-point summaries.

* Use easy templates to display stats.
* Templates that can be used in the "monster group" article as well.
* Templates to be used in mega-article with lots of monsters.
I am apparently not the only one who likes to write in English English here, but when you talk about an attribute in the game that has a name, such as "armor", you should treat it as a name rather than a word (a correct spelling would be "armour"). The short of it is that "Armor" is in most cases the correct way to write "Armour", and contributors can write words like "humour" or "humor" in whichever way they want. Any questions? If so, ask me. --Leord 18:11, 24 September 2008 (CEST)
Mods
Hi. Someone told me it would be helpful to put my mod wiki here (currently it's on a gaming wikia). I don't see a section for mods though, this looks like it's entirely for the original game. Any rules on this?
