The ilvl is a number that is used in many game calculations. In Classic {{iw|Diavlo_II Diablo II}} / {{iw|Diablo_II:Lord_of_Destruction Lord of Destruction}}, ilvl is invisible, but is usually equal to the mlvl of the monster which dropped it.

~~In {{iw|World_of_WarCraft World of WarCraft}}, ilvls were originally also invisible, but is available if seen with some addon, or checking an item database page outside of the game.~~

It seems likely we'll be able to either calculate or directly see ilvl on items in {{iw|Diablo_III Diablo III}}.
