No lore was provided for the Barbarian, since he wasn't an official character. It seems likely that Sierra dreamed up the character, and were told by Blizzard North not to include it officially, since they already had plans for the barbarian of ''Diablo II''. There are some obvious similarities; the lack of magic, the ability to use two handed weapons in one hand, and the gain in resistance every level.
