He must be killed to complete the [[Quests_Act_Five#Quest_Six:_Eve_of_Destruction|Eve of Destruction]] quest. Defeating Baal earns you a new title for each difficulty level, and enables characters to open the red portal to the [[Secret Cow Level]].
A much upgraded version of Baal, [[Uber Baal]] is encountered in the secret [[Pandemonium Event]], a realm-only quest to challenge the highest level players.
