Monster Type
Vulture Demon:
is a Monster
and an Animal
and a Demon
and an Undead
and a Guest Monster

Believed to be the mutated offspring of the large, native vultures that once inhabited these deserts, vulture demons seek only to kill and consume mortal beings that cross their paths. The giant vultures of old were, for the most part, scavengers who ate only the dead or dying. Now befouled, these creatures circle the desert in search of live prey. Their razor sharp beaks and talons can cause deep wounds, and a group of these demons can quickly bring down a victim. Although impossible to target while in flight, these vultures must land to attack, and are vulnerable when on the ground.

Vulture Demons are classified in all three monster types:

Vulture Demons are slow moving, giant vultures that may take wing and sail untouchable overhead. They have no air attack, but can crash to earth right next to your character and begin their very fast attack immediately, so keep an eye on them when they're flying. They hit hard and quickly, and are surprisingly dangerous toe to toe. Many a new character has met their unexpected fate against a pack of these things at close range.

Vultures have no physical resistance and not much blocking, so they aren't difficult to kill toe to toe; just try not to take on too many at once, or let them get in the first hit(s).

Statistics[edit]

Normal types of Carrion Birds do not drop weapons or armor, though they will drop small items like potions, scrolls, and runes. Bosses and Champions drop items, and the TC/Rune figures listed are for them.

  • The TC/Rune drops listed are the highest Treasure Class/Rune Group a normal monster of that type can drop.
    • TC Champions and Bosses can sometimes drop from the next higher group.
    • The max TC/Rune possible may depend on which level a monster spawns in, and can be lower than the maximum. See the item calculators to ascertain precisely what a monster from a given area can drop.

Offense[edit]

Vulture Demons have only their one kind of melee attack, though it's a very quick one. The Guest Monster carrion bird has a % chance to add poison damage to its melee attack.

Defenses[edit]

  • Regen Rate tells what % of a monster's hit points are recovered per second. Standard is 1.2/sec.
  • Blocking values are assigned to every monster in the game, but the ability is seldom enabled, so most monsters can not block (Hence the blocking % given on most Diablo II monster pages, including Blizzard's, is inaccurate.) When enabled, blocking tells what % of successful, blockable attacks will not damage the monster. Monsters need not carry a shield to block.
  • Drain Effectiveness tells what % of a character's mana and life steal apply to that monster. 100 is all, 0 is none.
  • Chill Effectiveness tells what % of a character's cold length applies to the monster. 100 is all, 0 is no freeze/chill at all.

Resistances[edit]

Normal Maggot Young have no resistances or immunities of any kind. The Guest Monster maggot young is an exception to this rule.

  • Resistances over 99% are listed as immunities and monsters will take no damage from that type of attack.
  • Immunities can be "broken" by skills that lower resistance, if the value drops below 99%. See the Resistances page for more details.
