Emeralds are most popular when used as sockets in weapons, especially for low level characters. Their poison damage is not very high, but it stops monster healing.
Poison damage stacks oddly in Diablo II, and has been tweaked many times in patches. In earlier versions of the game, poison damage multiplied while duration added, potentially granting very high damage over very long times. The effect is less pronounced in v1.11+.
