Oils are only found in Hellfire. They are potion-like liquids that are used on weapons or armor, boosting their damage, defense, and durability.

Oil Facts[edit]

  • Most oils have a temporary effect, lasting only for that game, but others can be used to permanently boost the maximum durability of items.
  • There is only one graphic for all types of oils, and oils look like an Elixir of Dexterity, when lying on the ground.
  • The more powerful oils should be saved up until an item worth using them on is found, though the durability restoring ones can be quite handy to save repair expenses as well.
  • No oils are sold by any NPC; they can only be found from monsters or chests in the dungeons.

Durability Improvements[edit]

These oils can be used on any type of weapon or armor, to repair the item's current durability, and/or to boost the item's maximum durability.

Blacksmith Oil[edit]

D1-p-oil.gif
  • Effect: Repairs 20% of an item's durability - or - adds 1 to max durability if the item is fully repaired (and has less than 100 durability.)
  • Availability: SP and MP.
  • Duration: Permanent.
  • Qlvl: 1

Blacksmith oil's bonus to an item's maximum durability is small, but these are found fairly often, and if used repeatedly on the same armor or weapon, the bonuses will add up nicely. Alternatively, they can be used as repair devices, and are very valuable for that purpose. For instance, if a Rogue's bow has 80 durability and costs 15,000 to repair fully, each Blacksmith's Oil will restore 17 durability, saving about 3000 gold per use. Warriors can exploit this even more effectively by waiting until an item is nearly broken, using their innate repair skill to fix it fully, and then using the Blacksmith's Oil to replace the one point of max durability the item loses when so repaired.

These techniques are less necessary in regulation Hellfire, since the game is fairly easy and gold is abundant. In some of the much more challenging player-made mods though, repair expenses can be formidable and judiciously-applied oils can save huge amounts of gold.

Oil of Fortitude[edit]

A much improved version of Blacksmith's Oil, the Oil of Fortitude adds considerably to the min and max durability of an item. The total gain varies, but it's usually around 20 min and 30 max.

D1-p-oil.gif
  • Effect: Adds +10 - +50 to the max and current durability, if total is under 200.
  • Availability: SP and MP.
  • Duration: Permanent.
  • Qlvl: 5

Oil of Durability[edit]

D1-p-oil.gif

An improved version of Blacksmith Oil.

  • Effect: Adds +50% durability to a weapon. If the item is fully repaired, adds 1 point extra durability.
  • Availability: Single player only.
  • Duration: Permanent.
  • Qlvl: ?

This oil is not listed in Jarulf's Guide.

Oil of Ages[edit]

D1-p-oil.gif
  • Effect: Makes an item indestructible.
  • Availability: Single player only.
  • Duration: Temporary (only for that game).
  • Qlvl: ?

Along with permanence, perhaps the most sought after oil, this one permanently makes an item indestructible. No more repair expenses. Best used on weapons that require frequent repairs, but can be helpful on armor that costs a lot to repair, or even shields. This oil is not listed in Jarulf' Guide.

Oil of Permanence[edit]

D1-p-oil.gif
  • Effect: Permanently makes an item indestructible.
  • Availability: Single player only.
  • Duration: Temporary (only for that game).
  • Qlvl: 17

Along with Oil of the Ages, perhaps the most sought after oil. This one permanently makes an item indestructible. No more repair expenses! Treat a weapon that requires frequent repairs, but this can also be helpful on armor that costs a lot to repair, or even shields. Obviously, this is best used on an item you don't think you will ever replace/upgrade.

Damage Improvement[edit]

Oil of Sharpness[edit]

D1-p-oil.gif
  • Effect: Adds +1 to maximum damage of a weapon. (If Max - Min is <30.)
  • Availability: Single player only.
  • Duration: Temporary (only for that game).
  • Qlvl: 1

The upper limit of this one is the max damage minus the min damage < 30. For instance, a sword that did 10-40 damage would not improve if treated with this oil.

Oil of Death[edit]

D1-p-oil.gif
  • Effect: +1 min / +2 max weapon damage. (If min/max < 30.)
  • Availability: Single player only.
  • Duration: Temporary (only for that game).
  • Qlvl: 10

The bonus damage goes to the total weapon damage. For instance a "Massive short sword" would do 2-4 damage +100% damage, for a total of 4-8. Oil of Death used on it would up the damage from 4-8 to 5-10. Note that the bonus is to the total weapon damage, after modifiers are applied; not to the base item (which would be 3-5 +100% damage = 6-12, in this example).

To/hit Improvement[edit]

Oil of Mastery[edit]

D1-p-oil.gif
  • Effect: Increases a weapon's chance to hit by 3-5%. (If total bonus is under +100% to/hit.)
  • Availability: Single player only.
  • Duration: Temporary (only for that game).
  • Qlvl: 10

Oil of Accuracy[edit]

D1-p-oil.gif
  • Effect: Increases a weapon's chance to hit by 1-2%.
  • Availability: SP and MP.
  • Duration: Temporary (only for that game).
  • Qlvl:

This bonus lasts only for the current game. The displayed +% chance to/hit will increase, on items that have such a bonus. (Such as Platinum or King's.) Items without a +% chance to/hit bonus will not display the increase, but it can be seen in the character window, when the item is equipped.

Jarulf's Guide says the item is only improved if it grants less than 50% to/hit, but this is at least partially untrue, since items with much higher to/hit bonuses display the listed improvement from this oil. (Possibly they display it, but don't actually improve?)

AC Improvement[edit]

Oil of Hardening[edit]

D1-p-oil.gif
  • Effect: Adds +1-2 AC (if AC < 60)
  • Availability: SP and MP.
  • Duration: Temporary (only for that game).
  • Qlvl: 1

Oil of Imperviousness[edit]

D1-p-oil.gif
  • Effect: Adds 3 to 5 Armor class to armor and shields. (If total is below 200.)
  • Availability: Single player only.
  • Duration: Temporary (only for that game).
  • Qlvl: 10

Lowers Item Requirements[edit]

Oil of Skill[edit]

D1-p-oil.gif
  • Effect: Reduces the attributes needed to use a weapon or armor by 5-10. (Can be lowered to zero.)
  • Availability: Single player only.
  • Duration: Temporary (only for that game).
  • Qlvl: 4
