Na-Krul Quest

Na-Krul is the end boss of the Crypt levels in Hellfire. He's designed to be the rough equivalent of Diablo, but he's found, alone, in a locked room, and can be released in a greatly weakened state. Furthermore, he fights alone, without any of the massed demons Diablo enjoys, and he lacks any spells, so can not harm enemies from a distance.

Na-Krul[edit]

Na-Krul
  • Quest Name: Na-Krul
  • Triggered By: Opening the sealed room.
  • Frequency: Every game in Hellfire.
  • Given by: Reconstructed note and lore books.
  • Location: Crypt level 4.
  • Reward: Four items: Book of Apocalypse, magical long battle/war bow, great sword, war staff.

Na-Krul is a huge, bipedal, tentacle-adorned boss demon. He's about the size of Diablo and moves even more quickly (he has the fastest food speed in the game), but he darts around a lot instead of going straight for the target, and unlike Diablo, he does not have any form of magic, so he can't touch you from a distance.

Na-Krul is alone in his locked room, and can thus be fought one on one, providing you clear out the room around him before you open his cage.

When Na-Krul emerges from his pen, he delivers a quick but crazed dialogue, which many players never hear in its entirety, since he can be killed so quickly.

Strategy Tips[edit]

When opened via the available lever, Na-Krul is only slightly weaker than Diablo, though he lacks Diablo's Apocalypse spell, or any sort of magical attack. (Admittedly, that's a big lack.) However, it's possible to nearly cut Na-Krul's hit points and AC in half by reading the spell books in front of his room, in the correct sequence. The sequence is revealed by assembling the three pieces of the torn note, and explained by reading the various lore tomes scattered throughout the Crypt.

Releasing Na-Krul via the levers cuts his hit points by 50%, and reduces his Armor Class by nearly that much. The proper order is:

In Spiritu Sanctum.
Praedictum Otium.
Efficio Obitus Ut Inimicus.

Which book contains which message varies randomly from game to game, so memorizing their location is not possible. However, even if you can't remember the sequence of the books, there are only 3 of them and there aren't any penalties for reading them out of order. Since the door opens automatically when you read them in the correct order, it's easy enough to just guess at the order, with only six possible combinations.

Na-Krul moves very quickly and has a fast melee hit. He can be tough to go toe to toe with, especially if you do not use the books to weaken him. On the whole though, he has fewer hit points, lower AC, lower to/hit, and deals less damage per strike than Diablo. The fact that he has no minions or a ranged attack further lessens his killing power.

The easiest way to defeat Na-Krul is to cast a wall spell (fire or lightning) right in front of its chamber, then open the chamber using the books and finally cast another wall on top of Na-Krul.

Quest Dialogues[edit]

Activation[edit]

Journal: The Meeting

I have tried spells, threats, abjuration and bargaining with this foul creature to no avail. My methods of enslaving lesser demons seem to have no effect on this fearsome beast.

Journal: The Tirade

My home is slowly becoming corrupted by the vileness of this unwanted prisoner. The crypts are full of shadows that move just beyond the corners of my vision. The faint scrabble of claws dances at the edges of my hearing. They are searching. I think. For this journal.

Journal: His Power Grows

In its ranting the creatures has let slip its name -- Na-Krul. I have attempted to research the name, but the smaller demons have somehow destroyed my library. Na-Krul... The name fills me with a cold dread. I prefer to think of it only as the creature rather than ponder its true name.

Journal: Na-Krul

The entrapped creature's howls of fury keep me from gaining much needed sleep. It rages against the one who sent it to the void, and it calls foul curses upon me for trapping it here. Its words fill my heart with terror and yet I cannot block out its voice.

Journal: The End

My time is quickly running out. I must record the ways to weaken the demon, and then conceal that text, lest his minions find some way to use my knowledge to free their lord. I hope that whoever finds this journal will seek the knowledge.
